EL PASO, Texas – The HBU softball team will head back on the road to take part in their final tournament of the season, the UTEP Tournament.

HBU and New Mexico will play at 1:30 pm central Friday, followed by a 6:30 pm central meeting with UTEP. On Saturday, the Huskies and NMSU meet again at 12 pm central, followed by a match-up with the host Miners at 4 pm central.

The meetings against NMSU will be the first ever on the diamond, while HBU leads the all-time series against UTEP, 2-1, as HBU took a three-game series in El Paso back in 2011.

HBU (4-6) opened up a 6-0 lead after the first inning and went on from there to run-rule visiting Texas Southern, 14-6 in five innings, Feb. 18 at Husky Field.

Lauren Schwirtlich and Shay Orsak combined to go 5-for-7 with seven RBI. Melissa Herman went 1-for-2 with two RBI.

Emily Mueller relieved starter Kendall Stiefel and earned the win as she allowed four hits, one run, and one walk with one strikeout in 4.0+ innings.

Orsak leads the Huskies with a .472 average, 17 hits, and six doubles. Her 12 RBI are one shy of leader Kirsten Schwirtlich's, as K. Schwirtlich also leads with three homers.

Mueller leads the pitchers with a 1.71 ERA, as she is 3-1 with six walks and 14 strikeouts.

New Mexico State (5-5) has hosted two tournaments to start the season. They last defeated Texas Tech, 8-6, on Feb. 16.

NMSU, picked as the preseason favorites to win the WAC this season, is led by Devon Thomey with a .600 average. Emma Adams is next with a .417 average, while Stacie Rodriguez has a team-best seven RBI.

Karysta Donisthorpe leads the pitchers with a 4.90 ERA.

UTEP (1-9) plays its first home games this weekend. The Miners last lost to Long Beach State, 5-4, on Feb. 15.
