HAMMOND, La. – No. 14 Southeastern Louisiana piled up 806 yards of offense in a 76-7 victory over HBU in Southland Conference football Saturday afternoon at Strawberry Stadium.
Freshman running back
Larry Day rushed for 36 yards and a touchdown for the Huskies (2-8, 1-5 SLC). Freshman quarterback
Isaiah Hall made his first career start and went 5-for-11 for 31 yards. Freshman cornerback
Taaron Timmons led HBU with nine tackles, while
Terrell Brown made eight. The Huskies forced four fumbles and recovered two, the only two turnovers of the game.
Jordan Barnett completed 13-of-17 passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns for SELA (7-3, 5-1), while Bryan Bennett completed 6-of-10 for 126 yards and a pair of scores. Eugene Bethea led the Lions with 125 yards, while Kody Sutton ran for 109 yards and three touchdowns. D'Shaie Landor ran for 71 yards and a pair of scores. Chris Malott caught three passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns, Devante Scott caught four for 102 yards and a score and Jeff Smiley had six receptions for 90 yards and two touchdowns.
Bennett opened the scoring for the Lions with a pair of touchdown passes, a 37-yard strike to Smiley and a 38-yarder to Scott in the first quarter.
On SELA's third possession, HBU stopped the Lions on fourth-and-eight at the Huskies 35. The Huskies then marched down the field on an 11-play, 65-yard touchdown drive that took 3:54 off the clock. Day rushed for 36 yards on the drive, and Hall completed a nine-yard pass to
Kwadre Wilson on third down to keep the drive alive. After Day rushed for eight yards to the Lions' 10, he followed up with a nine-yard run to the cusp of the goal line, before punching it in to make the score, 14-7.
In the second quarter, Sutton capped a 14-play, 79-yard drive that took up 6:16 for SELA with a six-yard touchdown run. On the Lions' next possession, a 50-yard scamper on a quarterback keeper by Landor set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Rasheed Harrell. Barnett added a pair of touchdown passes, a 35-yard completion to Malott and a 15-yarder to Smiley to send SELA into halftime with a 42-7 lead.
In the second half, Malott caught his second touchdown, Sutton had two touchdowns in the third quarter and Landor had both of his in the fourth quarter.
HBU will wrap up the regular season at home when it hosts Sam Houston State on Senior Day Nov. 15 at 3 p.m. at Husky Stadium. The season finale is also Battle Blue, so fans are encouraged to wear as much blue as possible as the Huskies take on the Bearkats.
