Men’s Soccer Shut Out at Utah Valley

Junior goalkeeper Philip Poser stops career-high nine shots

OREM, Utah – Utah Valley scored three goals in a span of 28 minutes, as HBU men's soccer lost to the Wolverines, 3-0, on a cold, wet Sunday afternoon at Clyde Field.

Senior midfielder Gustavo Alvarado took a team-high three shots for HBU (2-10-2 overall, 1-7-1 WAC). Junior goalkeeper Philip Poser set a new career high with nine saves. There was one team save.

Karson Payton had a three-point day for Utah Valley (7-6-2 overall, 3-3-2 WAC), as he took a match-high five shots. Collin Partee earned the win in goal, as he made three saves in 72:56. Derek Wilcox stopped one shot in 17:04. There was one team save.

HBU nearly scored the first goal of the day, as Stefan Lamanna's shot was stopped by a Wolverine defender in the 11th minute, resulting in a corner kick. Alvarado took the corner and sent in a great pass, but Partee stopped Marc- Anthone's shot.

In the 32nd minute, just three minutes after Utah Valley's Austin Buxtin's shot hit the post, the Wolverines took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Chandler Boyd. Payton passed the ball up the field to Joe Barakat, who sent a pass to Boyd, who scored from 18 yards out.

Utah Valley outshot HBU, 11-10, in the first half, but HBU had five of the seven corner kick attempts.

Utah Valley took a 2-0 lead three minutes into the second half, as Lucas Cawley stole the ball from a Huskies' defender and beat Poser.

In the 53rd minute, Payton's shot was stopped by a Huskies' defender, then Matt Gay's shot sailed high.

Following a foul by HBU in the 60th minute, Payton scored on a free kick 35 yards out for a 3-0 Utah Valley advantage.

Utah Valley outshot HBU, 25-12, for the match. HBU had a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

HBU concludes the regular season next weekend at home. The Huskies host Kansas City Friday at 7 pm, followed by a 1 pm kick-off against Air Force on Sunday. Prior to the match, the Huskies' five seniors will be honored: Alvarado, Patrick Toh, Kevin Suarez, Miguel Zapata, and Charlie Gagnon.
