Early Strikes Lift Men’s Soccer Past Bakersfield, 3-1

Huskies score two goals in first 23 minutes of match to defeat Bakersfield for first time in program history

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – HBU took a lead nine minutes into the match and never looked back, as men's soccer not only snapped a four-match losing streak, but defeated Bakersfield for the first time in program history, as the Huskies won Sunday afternoon, 3-1, at Main Soccer Field.

Miguel Zapata, Stefan Lamanna, and Gustavo Alvarado each scored for HBU (2-6-2 overall, 1-3-0 WAC). Tobenna Uzo led the Huskies with four shots, while he and Alvarado had two shots on goal apiece.

Philip Poser improved to 2-1-0 on the season, as he stopped a career-high six shots. There was one team save.

Christian Duarte and Joe Masumiya each had four shots for Bakersfield (8-5-1 overall, 2-3-0 WAC), as Duarte scored for the Roadrunners and had two shots on goal.

Anthony Perez made three saves in the loss. There was one team save.

HBU wasted little time getting a lead, as senior defender Zapata scored his first-collegiate goal in the 9th minute, assisted by Uzo. Uzo's initial shot was deflected, but went right to Zapata, who shot and scored.

The Huskies took a 2-0 lead on an individual effort by Lamanna in the 23rd minute. Lamanna dribbled past the Roadrunners' defenders and beat the keeper low-side.

Bakersfield cut the deficit in half, as Duarte scored, assisted by Brian Charles, in the 69th minute. Charles passed to Duarte, who scored from 15 yards out, as HBU still maintained a 2-1 lead.

HBU outshot Bakersfield, 8-7, in the opening half, as the Huskies led the Roadrunners, 2-1. Each team had one corner kick.

In the 75th minute, Uzo almost gave the Huskies a 3-1 advantage, but a Roadrunner player made a team save.

One minute later, Masumiya's shot was blocked, which put Poser out of position. Simon Doherty went to shoot into an empty net and tie the match at 2-all, but a Huskies' defender made the save and kept HBU in the lead.

Poser made two big saves in the 86th minute, the second save coming on one of Bakersfield's nine second-half corner kicks.

In the 89th minute, Alvarado and Patrick Toh gave HBU some breathing room, as Toh passed the ball to Alvarado on a throw-in and Alvarado scored from three yards out for a 3-1 Huskies lead.

Bakersfield outshot the Huskies, 12-3, in the second half and 19-11 for the match. Corner kicks were 10-1 in favor of the Roadrunners.

HBU returns home to Sorrels Field to host Grand Canyon and UNLV on Homecoming Weekend. The match against GCU is Friday, Oct. 24 at 7 pm, followed by a 1 pm kick against the Rebels on Sunday, Oct. 26.
