Ricky-Paul Mupier's first goal of the season, which came at the 71
st minute, sparked a furious HBU battle for the equalizer. But visiting Grand Canyon weathered the storm, as the 'Lopes held on for the 2-1 conference win before a sellout crowd Friday night at Sorrels Field.
Mupier came off the bench to play 47 minutes and take three shots and two shots on goal for HBU (2-7-2 overall, 1-4-0 WAC).
Patrick Toh took a team-high four shots, with two hitting the target.
Philip Poser took the loss in goal, as he allowed two goals and made four saves.
Albert Sanchez Garcia took a match-high eight shots and four shots on goal for Grand Canyon (4-8-2 overall, 2-3-1 WAC). Kyle Summerhill joined Garcia as the goal scorers for the 'Lopes.
Luca Licciardi earned the win between the pipes as he made four saves and allowed one goal.
Following a yellow card on HBU in the 19
th minute that resulted in a free kick, Garcia took the shot and scored past Poser to give GCU a 1-0 lead.
Shots were even at four-apiece in the first half, while HBU doubled up the 'Lopes in corner kicks, 4-2.
Summerhill gave the visitors a 2-0 lead in the 66
th minute, assisted by Daniel Wall.
Six minutes later, the Huskies were awarded a corner kick.
Gustavo Alvarado took the corner and Mupier found the back of the net to cut the deficit to one and drastically change the momentum of the match.
Sebastian Henke's shot from outside the box went just over the cross bar. Later, a beautiful ball was sent into the box, which was blocked and came very close to being a hand ball, which would have resulted in a penalty kick, but play resumed. In the 89
th minute, Poser made a spectacular save on a Garcia breakaway to give the Huskies a chance.
Shots were even at nine-apiece in the second half and 13-all for the match. HBU took three of the four second-half corner kicks and had a 7-3 advantage for the match.
HBU will look to regroup when it hosts conference leader UNLV Sunday at 1 pm.
