HOUSTON – HBU men's soccer had a perfect first half, but the WAC's top team, UNLV, scored three times in the second half to subdue the Huskies, 3-2, on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Sorrels Field.
This afternoon was the first time UNLV had trailed since the Rebels lost to Kansas City Oct. 19, and the Huskies join only four other teams (Kansas City, UC Irvine, Gonzaga, and Bradley) to have scored two or more goals against the Rebels this season.
George Kelley and
Patrick Toh each scored for HBU (2-8-2 overall, 1-5-0 WAC), as Thilo Borgman recorded an assist. Toh led all players with five shots, while he and
Stefan Lamanna had two shots on goal apiece.
Kevin Suarez took the tough loss in goal, as he made seven saves and allowed three goals. There was one team save by
Corey Lutz.
UNLV's (12-3-1 overall, 6-1-0 WAC) leading scorer, Salvador Bernal, had a three-point match with a goal and an assist to lead the Rebels. Connor Coletti and Kyle Mellies also scored.
Ryan Harding made two saves in net while allowing two goals. There were two team saves, both by Mellies.
HBU took a 1-0 lead in the 28
th minute, as Borgmann took one of HBU's three first-half corner kicks and sent in a great pass into the box, as Kelley scored past the WAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, Harding. Prior to that, Mellies stopped a potential goal off the foot of Toh, which led to the corner. Mellies made another team save earlier in the match, robbing
Tobenna Uzo in the 12
th minute.
The Huskies took all of the momentum leading into halftime, as, with the final 10 seconds winding down in the opening half, Toh put pressure on a Rebel defender, stole the ball, and beat Harding far-side, with just one second left in the first half to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead.
HBU doubled up UNLV in shots in the first half, 12-6, and took three of four corner kicks.
UNLV came out firing to start the second half, with a shot attempt blocked in the first 1:44. In the 61
st minute, Sandal took a shot that was stopped by Lutz, saving a goal, but it hit his hand, resulting in a red card and a penalty kick. Sandal beat Suarez and cut the Rebel deficit in half, 2-1, and also causing the Huskies to play a man down the final 30 minutes.
Two minutes later, UNLV was awarded a corner kick. Bradley Kamdem took the corner and Mellies headed it past Suarez to tie the match at 2-all.
With the match still tied in the 83
rd minute, Kelley got his second yellow card of the match, which sent him off and resulted in the Huskies playing two men down for the final seven minutes.
Four minutes later, Coletti scored the eventual game winner. Bernal passed the ball to Coletti at the top of the box, who fired it top-shelf with a lot of traffic in front of Suarez to give UNLV a 3-2 lead.
UNLV outshot HBU, 18-5, in the second half and 24-17 in the match. Corner kicks were even at four apiece.
HBU makes its final road trip of the season next weekend. The Huskies play at Seattle Friday, Oct. 31 at 9 pm central and Utah Valley Sunday, Nov. 2 at 2 pm central.
