Huskies battle intrastate rival Lumberjacks in conference home opener.

HOUSTON - HBU hosts conference-leading and defending regular-season champion Stephen F. Austin in Southland Conference basketball Thursday night at Sharp Gym. The live video broadcast with Lonnie King presented by Legacy Sports Network can be seen on HBUHuskies.com.
 
Sophomore guard Rob Lewis leads three HBU (3-11, 0-2 SLC) players in double figures with 11.6 points per game. Junior guard Tyler Russell adds 10.7 points per game, while sophomore forward Cody Joyce averages 10.4 points per game. Junior center Ricmonds Vilde leads the Huskies on the glass with 5.7 rebounds per game, while junior guard Marcel Smith is averaging 4.5 assists per game over the last six games and is HBU's all-time leader in free throw percentage.
 
Jacob Parker paces SFA (13-2, 2-0) with 16.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. Desmond Haymon averages 14.0 points per game, Deshaunt Walker adds 11.7 points per game off the bench, and Thomas Walkup chips in with 10.3 points per game. Trey Pinkney leads the Lumberjacks with 45 assists.
 
HBU dropped its first two Southland games on the road to Oral Roberts and Central Arkansas last week. Joyce and Russell had 10 points each in the loss to ORU, while sophomore guard Caleb Crayton dropped a season-high 20 points at UCA Saturday. SFA has won 10 in a row, including a sweep of Lamar and Sam Houston State at home last week. Haymond had 20 points against Lamar to lead five Lumberjacks in double figures, then Parker went off for 28 points against Sam Houston State Saturday.
 
SFA has won nine of 10 meetings against HBU all-time, but this is the first meeting as conference rivals. The Lumberjacks won the last meeting against the Huskies, when they were a member of the NAIA, 87-47, on Jan. 3, 2005 in Nacogdoches.
 
The Huskies return to action when they host defending conference tournament champion Northwestern State Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Sharp Gym.
