MISSOULA, Mont. – The HBU women's soccer team was in its fifth-straight one-goal match, but this time the ball bounced the Huskies' way, as HBU defeated former Great West Conference rival Utah Valley, 1-0, to conclude the Montana Cup Saturday evening from South Campus Stadium.
Neither team scored in the opening 45 minutes, as Utah Valley took control for most of the half. The Wolverines outshot the Huskies, 11-5, as HBU goalkeeper
Stephanie Castellon made six saves in the first half. The Huskies got some breaks, as Utah Valley hit a pair of posts. The Wolverines also had a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The second half was more even, as Utah Valley outshot the Huskies 8-7 and corner kicks were tied at two apiece. The Wolverines used two goalkeepers, as Jessica Duffin played the first half and Lauren Sack played the second.
It took just a minute and 10 seconds for
Natalie Hager to welcome Sack into the match, as her shot sailed just wide right.
Each team had ample shot opportunities until just after the 74th minute, as the Wolverines' Jamie Brown's shot was stopped by Castellon. Thirty seconds later, Hager scored the match's only goal, assisted by
Taylor Gibson. With the keeper out of position, Hager scored from just four yards out.
The Huskies kept the pressure on after that goal, as
Rebekah Tovar's, Gibson's, and
Alessia Dal Monte's shots were each stopped by Sack. The Huskies maintained pressure while not allowing a Wolverine to get behind the defense, as Utah Valley could not get a shot attempt the remainder of the match and the Huskies even had a corner kick in the 83rd minute.
Castellon improved to 1-2-0 as the 10 saves were the most since setting the program record of 18 at New Mexico State on Aug. 28, 2011. Lauren Sack dropped to 1-4-0.
HBU (1-4-0) will return home to host a pair of Conference USA opponents: UTEP on Friday, Sept. 13 and Houston on Sunday, Sept. 15 at Sorrels Field, with both matches starting at 7 pm.
