HOUSTON – Allison Abendschein scored her first collegiate goal, but visiting Northwestern State scored the equalizer early in the second half, then notched the game winner in overtime to defeat HBU, 2-1, Friday evening at Sorrels Field.

Abendschein's hard work finally paid off, as she scored the match's first goal in the 32nd minute, which was assisted by Rebekah Tovar. Tovar passed the ball ahead to Abendschein, who was in a race with Lady Demons' goalkeeper Jessica Danku. Abendschein reached the ball first and flipped the ball over Danku and into the back of the net. Abendschein, who leads all freshmen with 16 shots and eight shots on goal, scored two goals in the Huskies' exhibition match at Texas State on Aug. 17.

That was the only scoring in the first half, as HBU outshot the Lady Demons 10-8 and 5-4 in shots on goal. Northwestern State had the only two corner kicks in the half.

The Huskies played a bit more conservative in the second half and the Lady Demons took advantage. Following an HBU foul near midfield, Danku took the free kick. She kicked the ball inside the left of the box to Nikki Saunders, who sent a centering cross to Cassandra Briscoe who tied the match at one in the 55th minute.

Danku mad two saves in a span of two minutes to keep the match tied. The Huskies then had some luck on their side, as Northwestern State's Shannon Danku's shot hit the post in the 75th minute. Nine minutes later, with HBU goalkeeper Shelby Horn out of position, Ashlee Savona had an open net to shoot into, but was blocked by an HBU defender, which kept the match tied at one.

Abendschein nearly scored her second goal of the night in the 85th minute, but Danku got a glove on the ball, which resulted in a corner kick. The Lady Demons cleared the ball away with no damage and the two teams entered overtime.

HBU had a couple of shot attempts go wide to start the extra session, while the only shot attempt for Northwestern State counted. There was a bouncing ball inside the box and Savona capitalized, kicking the ball into the back of the net for an unassisted tally in the 94th minute.

Horn dropped to 0-2-0 on the season, as she made four saves. Danku improved to 2-4-1, as she made eight saves. HBU outshot Northwestern State 17-16 on the night.

HBU (1-7-1, 0-2-0 SLC) will continue Southland Conference play at Lamar Sunday afternoon at 1 pm.
