Women’s Soccer Opens Southland Play at Abilene Christian Sunday

ABILENE, Texas – The HBU women's soccer team will play in their Southland Conference debut Sunday afternoon, when the Huskies take on another SLC newcomer in Abilene Christian.

The match, which starts at 1 pm, will mark the first-ever meeting between the Huskies and Wildcats.

HBU (1-5-1) last battled visiting Houston to a 0-0 double overtime tie on Sept. 15. The Huskies had several opportunities to score, but couldn't get one past the Cougars' netminder. Stephanie Castellon, meanwhile, made eight saves in her second shutout in the last three matches. She is 1-3-1 on the season with a 0.87 goals-against average and a .889 save percentage.

Rebekah Tovar leads the Huskies' offense with two goals and four points. Natalie Hager has the only other goal and the lone game winner. Taylor Gibson has one assist.

Abilene Christian (7-0-1, 1-0-0 SLC) defeated visiting Sam Houston State 2-1 in its first Southland Conference match Friday afternoon. Jacey Ferrara and Andrea Carpenter scored for the Wildcats.

Carpenter leads ACU in goals (7), assists (4), points (18), shots (25), shots on goal (10), and game-winning goals (2). Ferrara has nine points on three goals and three assists.

Kelsey Dombrowski and Sydney Newton have both seen action in goal, but Dombrowski has started all seven matches. She has a 4-0-0 record, a 0.57 GAA, and a .778 save percentage. The two keepers have four combined shutouts.
