Baseball Falls to Texas State

Senior second baseman Josh Foust went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and two RBIs in Tuesday's loss to Texas State.

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State used seven pitchers and a three-run third inning to claim a 7-3 victory over Houston Baptist in non-conference baseball Tuesday night at Bobcat Ballpark.
 
Senior second baseman Josh Foust went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, two RBIs and a run for the Huskies (20-21-1). Senior centerfielder Jake Gonzalez and sophomore catcher Samm Wiggins each singled and scored.
 
Cory Geisler went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, while Austin O'Neal went 2-for-2 and scored a run for the Bobcats (21-23). Garrett Mattlage had a single and two RBIs, Matt Smith singled and scored twice and Nick Smelser drove in a pair.
 
Sophomore lefthander Brandon Hammerly (1-5) took the loss for HBU, allowing four runs, three earned, on one hit with six walks in 2.2 innings.
 
Kyle Finnegan (4-2) earned the win for Texas State, allowing one run on one hit and striking out five in three innings. Bobcats starter Scott Grist tossed two perfect innings.
 
Texas State took the lead in the bottom of the second when O'Neal led off with a double to leftcenter, advanced to third on a passed ball, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Smelser.
 
HBU tied it in the top of the third as Foust blasted a two-out, solo home run to left center.
 
Smith led off the bottom of the third with a walk, and after Hammerly got two quick outs, he hit Lovejoy and walked Stumph to load the bases. Smith scored on a wild pitch, O'Neal walked to reload the bases, then Smelser walked to plate another run and chase Hammerly from the game. Geisler hit a grounder down the third baseline and sophomore third baseman Curtis Jones made a diving stop, but didn't have a play, giving the Bobcats a 4-1 lead.
 
Texas State extended its lead to 6-1 in the bttom of the sixth on Mattlage's two-run single.
 
Gonzalez led off the seventh for HBU with a single to right, stole second and went to third on an error on the throw. Junior first baseman Mike Chamberlain followed with an RBI groundout, and Wiggins singled to right. Foust ripped a double to the gap in leftcenter to make the score 6-3.
 
The Bobcats tacked on a run in the bottom of the inning on another RBI single by Geisler.
 
The Huskies return to action when they host NYIT in a four-game Great West Conference series Friday through Sunday at Husky Field. Friday's opener begins at 2 p.m., followed by a doubleheader Saturday at noon and the single-game finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
