NATCHITOCHES, La. – Houston Baptist was swept in its third-straight conference series, as the Huskies lost to Northwestern State, 6-1, Sunday afternoon from Lady Demon Diamond.
Kirsten Schwirtlich hit her team-leading ninth home run of the season for HBU (13-22, 6-15 SLC), as she went 1-for-3 at the plate.
Daniella Rodarte went 2-for-3, while
Victoria Granchelli and
Lauren Schwirtlich each went 1-for-3.
Lori Earl (2-4) started in the circle and took the loss, allowing six hits and six runs (three earned) while striking out two in 3.0 innings.
Kendall Stiefel pitched the final 3.0 innings and allowed one hit while whiffing one.
Brianna Rodriguez went 2-for-3 at the plate for Northwestern State (34-10, 15-5 SLC), while Cassandra Barefield and Natalie Landry each had two RBI.
Kylie Roos (13-2) went the distance in the circle, allowing five hits and one walk, while striking out five.
HBU took a 1-0 lead, as Schwirtlich hit a two-out homer to left field. The Lady Demons tied the game with an RBI single by Barefield, bringing home Rodriguez, who doubled.
After going down in order in the bottom of the second, Northwestern State scored three times in the bottom of the third. A hit by pitch, a bunt single, and an error loaded the bases with nobody out. Rodriguez hit an RBI single, which gave the Lady Demons a 2-1 lead and the bases still loaded. Barefield hit a sac fly, which scored Tara McKenney and Brittany Virgoe also scored.
V. Granchelli hit a one-out single in the top of the fourth, but couldn't be brought home. The Lady Demons led off the bottom half with a single, followed by a two-run homer by Landry, as Northwestern State led 6-1.
The Huskies went down in order in the top of the fifth and sixth and tried to start something in the top of the seventh, as Rodarte hit a one-out single. But the Lady Demons got a strike out and a fielder's choice to end the game.
HBU begins a five-game home stand Tuesday, April 23, as HBU hosts Prairie View A&M in a doubleheader beginning at 2 pm.
