HOUSTON – After being held scoreless through six innings, Houston Baptist sent 11 batters to the plate and exploded for seven runs in the seventh inning to down future Southland Conference rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 7-2, Tuesday afternoon at Husky Field.
Junior shortstop
CJ Jarvis went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, a walk, a stolen base and a run for the Huskies (16-16-1). Senior centerfielder
Jake Gonzalez singled and drove in a pair of runs to extend his hitting streak to eight games. Junior rightfielder
Jordan McCoy singled, was hit by a pitch and scored a run and has now reached safely in all 33 games. Junior first baseman
Bradley Brown went 2-for-3, and junior
Jordan Hebert was 2-for-4 and scored a run.
Sophomore righthander
Curtis Jones (1-0) earned the win, allowing two runs on three hits, and striking out five in 4.2 innings. Freshman lefthander
Matthew McCollough started the game and did not allow a run in 2.1 innings, while sophomore righthander
Josh Martinez was perfect and struck out three over the final two innings.
Cody Stephens went 3-for-4 with a double and drove in a run for the Islanders (21-15) , while Brad Porras went 2-for-4 with a home run. AJ Longoria (1-1) took the loss for TAMU-CC, giving up four runs on three hits and walking one without recording an out.
Porras broke a scoreless tie with a two-out solo homer to leftcenter in the top of the fifth. The Islanders added a run in the top of the seventh as Russell Vaughan singled, then scored on Stephens' two-out double to rightcenter to put TAMU-CC ahead, 2-0.
The Huskies answered in the bottom of the inning as Martinez drew a leadoff walk, senior second baseman
Josh Foust singled to left and Hebert laid down a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. Jarvis followed by ripping a two-run single past the first baseman to tie the game. Senior leftfielder
Luke Clements also reached on a bunt single to drive in Hebert with the go-ahead run. McCoy was hit by a pitch to once again load the bases with no outs, and Gonzalez smashed a two-run single to left. After Brown moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt, Tully added an RBI single and Martinez had a sacrifice fly to give the HBU a 7-2 lead.
Martinez came in and shut the Islanders down the rest of the way.
At 33 games, HBU moved to .500 at the latest point in the season since returning to Division I competition in 2008. The Huskies have been below that mark since they were 5-5-1 on March 2, but have won seven of their last 10, including three straight.
HBU returns to action when it hosts Texas-Pan American in a four-game Great West Conference series Friday through Sunday at Husky Field. Friday's single game starts at 2 p.m., followed by a noon doubleheader Saturday and the single-game finale Sunday at 2 p.m.
