LAKE CHARLES, La. – Several records were set in Houston Baptist's 16-1 five-inning victory over Southern, as the Huskies concluded the McNeese State Cowgirl Classic in decisive fashion Sunday afternoon from Cowgirl Field.
HBU is 4-0, which is the first time the Huskies have started 4-0 since they began the 2007 season 6-0.
Kirsten Schwirtlich, who went 2-for-4 with eight RBI, broke the program record of six RBI set by several players. The last time a Husky had six RBI was Kelli deRegnier at UT-Permian Basin in 2005. The original record was held by Amy Mallette against Incarnate Word in 1991. The last time HBU scored at least 16 runs in a game was an 18-0 win at Prairie View A&M on Feb. 19, 2010.
K. Schwirtlich hit a grand slam in the second inning and added a three-run blast an inning later.
Callie Herrington went 2-for-2 with an RBI, while
Daniella Rodarte went 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored.
Kendall Stiefel earned the win in the circle, allowing six hits, one earned run, and two walks while striking out eight.
Shabanese Brown and Gailyn Thibeaux each went 2-for-2 for Southern (0-9). Brown had the lone RBI and run scored for the Lady Jags.
Kendyl Stevenson started in the circle and took the loss, allowing 10 hits, 12 runs (nine earned), and two walks, while striking out one in 3.0 innings. Carla Arismendi pitched the final 1.0 and gave up two hits, four runs (none earned), and one walk, while striking out two.
Lauren Schwirtlich started the game with a triple down the right-field line. The next batter up,
Rebecca Rademacher, reached on a fielder's choice, as Schwirtlich was out at home. Rademacher later scored on an RBI single by
Melissa Herman.
HBU scored four runs in the bottom of the second, thanks to a two-out grand slam by K. Schwirtlich.
The Huskies exploded for a seven-run third inning to break the game open.
Hailey Harris hit a two-run double, bringing home
Mac Christensen and
Kate Maddock. The very next batter, Rodarte, hit a two-run home run. Following a walk and a single, K. Schwirtlich did it again, hitting a three-run home run.
Southern got one of the runs back in the top of the fourth, as Brown's lead-off homer made the score 12-1.
The error bug hit Southern in the bottom of the fourth, as two Lady Jag errors led to four Husky runs, all unearned.
Stiefel got two strikeouts and a pop-up to end the top of the fifth and the game.
HBU will play at #6 Texas in Austin on Wed., Feb. 20 at 4:30 pm.
