LAKE CHARLES, La. – For the second-straight day, Houston Baptist had a convincing shutout win to begin the season. This time it was a 9-0 five-inning victory over Alcorn State on Saturday afternoon on the second day of the McNeese State Cowgirl Classic.
Lauren Schwirtlich went 3-for-3 in her first start for the Huskies (2-0), as she had two RBI and two runs scored. Her sister,
Kirsten Schwirtlich, followed a 2-for-2 performance against Southern on Friday with a 2-for-3 game against the Lady Braves this afternoon. She also had two RBI and had one run scored.
Hailey Harris went 2-for-2 with two RBI.
Daniella Rodarte had the other RBI.
Keely Shuler followed suit with
Lori Earl's performance against Southern the day before, with a two-hit, eight strikeout performance.
Alcorn State (0-1) had just two hits, as Chqu Givens and Alex Harris each went 1-for-2. De Rancilio started the game in the circle for the Lady Braves and allowed nine hits, eight runs (four earned) and one walk in 3.1 innings. Chama Moore pitched the final 0.1 and gave up two hits, one earned run and one walk while striking out one.
Alcorn State started the game in the top of the first with a hit by Givens. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, but could not score after successive infield pop-ups.
The Huskies took advantage, scoring a single run in the bottom half of the inning. L. Schwirtlich started the inning with a single, advanced to second on a sac bunt, then stole third. She then crossed home on an Alcorn State error.
The Huskies scored twice in the bottom of the second, as
Mac Christensen began the inning with a hit and advanced to second on an error. After a sac bunt moved Christensen to third, she scored after a single up the middle by Rodarte. Rodarte reached third and scored on a Lady Brave error to make the score 3-0 HBU.
HBU broke the game wide open with a six-run, six-hit top of the fifth. K. Schwirtlich hit a two-run home run. The Huskies batted around as Harris, who began the inning with a single, knocked in two RBI with another single.
The Lady Braves started the inning with a single, but could not break the shutout, as Alcorn State went down with two fly outs and a strikeout to end the game.
HBU plays Louisiana Tech at 5 pm today.
