HOUSTON – HBU led visiting UT-Pan American by 20 entering halftime, but a furious second-half comeback by the Broncs resulted in a 76-74 UTPA victory Tuesday evening at Sharp Gym.

HBU (3-4) looked prime to snap UTPA's (5-2) 11-game winning streak in the all-time series, as the Huskies have not defeated the Broncs since a 64-51 victory at home on Feb. 15, 2001.

Shanice Steenholdt and Erin McGarrachan paved the way for the Huskies, as they each recorded double-doubles. Steenholdt scored a game-high 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, while McGarrachan scored 13 points and grabbed a game-high 14 boards. Rachel Arthur scored 15 points and Anna Strickland scored 10 points, two shy of her career high of 12 which came in the season opener against UT Arlington.

Brittany Bush led five Broncs in double figures, as she scored 16 points and pulled a team-high 11 rebounds. Shawnte' Goff and Jasmine Thompson each scored 15, KaeLynn Boyd scored 12, and Tonisha Walker dropped 11.

UTPA scored the game's first points, but HBU rattled off 10 of the next 12 points to lead, 10-4, forcing the Broncs to call an early timeout at the 17:47-mark of the first half.

Arthur answered consecutive Bronc rallies, as Walker scored four points on a three and a free throw, but the Huskies answered with a trey by Arthur to give the Huskies a 13-8 lead with 16:17 remaining. Thompson answered with a three-pointer, but Arthur responded with another trey, as the Huskies kept the five-point advantage, 16-11, with 14:14 to go.

The Broncs cut the deficit to one, as Bush hit consecutive jumpers, but the Huskies went on a tear, as they went on a 24-0 run for their largest lead of the game, 40-15, with 4:33 remaining in the first half. Steenholdt scored 10 points in the run and both McGarrachan and Heidi Sihvola hit from downtown. A layup by Walker at the 3:14-mark stopped the bleeding and halted a 10-minute dry spell for the Broncs, as HBU led, 40-17.

The Broncs continued to battle and cut the deficit to 20, 42-22, ended by a three-pointer by Thompson with 61 seconds left in the opening half.

Steenholdt led HBU with 10 points and eight rebounds in the first half, while Bush led the Broncs with 10 points.

The Broncs began the second half on an 8-2 run, cultivated by a three-pointer by Goff at the 16:52-mark to make the score 44-30 Huskies.

The Huskies answered back with back-to-back layups by Strickland to give HBU an 18-point advantage, 48-30, with 15:57 remaining, but UTPA kept chipping away, eventually bringing the deficit to single digits, as Goff's pair of free throws brought the Broncs to within nine, 59-50, with 9:16 to go in regulation.

A layup, followed by another layup on the ensuing possession by Monet Neal gave the Huskies a 13-point lead, 63-50, but that would be the largest the Huskies would lead the remainder of the game, as UTPA went on a 19-6 run to tie the game at 69-all with 3:43 to go in the second half.

Tayler Jefferson swished a three to give the Huskies the lead again with just over two minutes remaining, and the Huskies led by as many as four following a pair of Steenholdt free throws that made the score 74-70 with 1:32 remaining, but a layup by Bush and two free throws by Walker made the score 74-all with 35 seconds remaining.

The Broncs stole the Huskies' in-bounds pass, as they could now play for the last shot. Boyd's initial layup was missed, but Thompson grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on the put-back with five seconds remaining to give UTPA a 76-74 lead. The Huskies had a chance to send the game to overtime, but McGarrachan's shot rolled around the rim and out.

HBU is off before playing at No. 9 Baylor on Sunday, Dec. 15 at 2 pm.
