HOUSTON – HBU had solid performances all around, as the Huskies snapped a four-game losing streak with a 99-48 win over Huston-Tillotson Saturday afternoon at Sharp Gym.
Shanice Steenholdt led all players with 36 points and 15 rebounds, coming just four points and seven rebounds shy of tying the single-game records she set two seasons ago against the same Lady Rams. She also recorded six assists, four steals, and one block.
Rachel Arthur scored a career-high 21 points for HBU (4-7), as she also added three assists, one block, one steal, and one rebound.
Anna Strickland came off the bench to tie her career high of 12 points and she also pulled down nine rebounds.
Janequa Moore led Huston-Tillotson (1-6) with 14 points, followed by Arial Callis with 10. Chaquitta Thrower was the top rebounder with eight. HBU forced a season-high 33 turnovers, resulting in 40 Huskies' points.
The only ties in the game came with the score 2-2 and 4-4. With the score knotted at 4-all, HBU used an 11-0 run to take a 15-4 lead with 14:25 remaining in the opening half. Steenholdt had nine of the 11 points and the Huskies had four steals in the run.
The Lady Rams cut the deficit to nine, 17-6, but a three-pointer by
Wiebke Bruns sparked another run, as the Huskies eventually led HTU by as many as 19 with under six minutes to play in the first half.
The Huskies' largest lead of the first half was 21, which came on an old-fashioned three-point play by
Tayler Jefferson, which made the score 45-24 with 1:38 remaining. HTU answered back and Steenholdt came back with a layup to give the Huskies a 21-point lead again with 32 seconds remaining. A layup by Mariah Silva cut the deficit to 19, as HBU led the Lady Rams at halftime, 47-28.
Steenholdt scored 21 points in the first half and had eight rebounds. Jasmine Dukes led the Lady Rams with seven points.
HBU started the second half on fire, outscoring the Lady Rams, 14-0, to take a 61-28 lead with 15:39 remaining in regulation.
With eight minutes to go in the game, the Huskies had outscored HTU, 35-9, in the half for their largest lead of the game, 82-35. Arthur was fouled with six seconds to go and she made both free throws, which gave her her career high in points and the Huskies' largest lead in the game, 51.
That was HBU's final non-conference game of the season. The Huskies open conference play with their first games as a member of the Southland Conference next weekend, as HBU plays at reigning SLC tournament champion Oral Roberts on Thursday, Jan. 2 at 5 pm, then at Central Arkansas on Jan. 4 at 2 pm.
