Women’s Basketball Falls to ORU, 85-73

Shanice Steenholdt records sixth double-double of the season

TULSA, Okla. – Junior forward Shanice Steenholdt recorded her sixth double-double of the season as she had team highs of 32 points and 15 rebounds, but it wasn't enough in HBU's 85-73 loss to Oral Roberts in the Southland Conference opener for both teams Thursday night at the Mabee Center.

Steenholdt paced HBU (4-8, 0-1 SLC) with 32 points, 13 rebounds, and three blocks. Heidi Sihvola scored a career-high 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting and 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Wiebke Bruns also scored 12 points.

Oral Roberts (2-9, 1-0 SLC) was led in scoring by Dorottya Balla with 30 points, followed by Christian Key with 18. Sarah Shelton pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.

ORU scored the game's first six points, prompting a quick HBU timeout at the 18:19-mark. The Huskies got on the board with three points by Steenholdt, but the Golden Eagles increased their lead to eight, 11-3, following a three-pointer by Kaylan Mayberry with 14:38 remaining in the first half.

With ORU leading, 12-5, HBU went on a 13-6 run to tie the game at 18-all at the 9:57-mark, following a layup by Steenholdt.

The teams exchanged baskets and were tied again at 20. An HBU turnover resulted in a three-pointer by Balla to give the Golden Eagles a three-point lead. That change in momentum sparked ORU, who proceeded to go on an 11-2 run to lead by nine, 31-22, with just under four minutes remaining in the opening half. The Huskies battled back and a Tayler Jefferson layup with three seconds to go brought the deficit to six, 36-30, at halftime.

Steenholdt led all players in the first half with 18 points and eight rebounds. Balla led ORU with 13 points, while Shelton had seven rebounds.

HBU started the second half on a 14-4 run to take a 44-40 lead at the 15:49-mark of the second half. The Huskies' first lead of the game came on a steal and fast-break layup by Rachel Arthur.

Balla scored four points for ORU to tie the game at 44 with 14:48 remaining in regulation. ORU took a one-point lead, but the Huskies answered with a trey by Jefferson at the 13:08-mark.

A layup by Noora Jaervikangas tied the game for the final time, as the Golden Eagles used a 12-4 run to lead by eight, 61-53, with 8:24 to go in regulation.

The Huskies came as close as three, following a steal and fast-break layup by Steenholdt to make the score, 69-66, with 2:46 remaining, but HBU had to foul the final two minutes and ORU went 10-of-12 from the charity stripe in the final two minutes to seal the win.

HBU will look for its first Southland win at Central Arkansas on Saturday at 2 pm.
