BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – HBU trailed Bakersfield by four at halftime, but the Roadrunners outscored the Huskies, 45-29, in the second half en route to an 81-61 victory over HBU Thursday evening from the Icardo Center.
Shanice Steenholdt recorded her fourth double-double of the season for HBU (3-6), as she scored 14 points and grabbed a team-high 14 rebounds.
Erin McGarrachan scored a team-best 17 points on 8-of-15 shooting.
Tayler Jefferson was the third Husky to score in double figures as she finished with 11 points.
Bakersfield (4-6) was led by Tyonna Outland with 28 points. Alyssa Shannon scored 11 points and dished out a game-high eight assists, while Batabe Zempare pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds.
With the teams tied at three, Bakersfield scored five-straight to lead by five, 8-3, with 17:45 remaining in the first half. The Roadrunners led by as many as eight, 17-9, before the Huskies scored four-straight to trail by four. The run ended on a steal by Jefferson and a fast-break layup by McGarrachan at the 13:32-mark to make the score17-13.
HBU continued to battle and eventually took its first lead of the game midway through the first half on a layup by
Anna Strickland. The Huskies led by as many as three, but the 'Runners regained the lead and led by as many as five on a couple of occasions in the final minutes before settling for a four-point halftime lead, 36-32, as Melissa Sweat hit a three-pointer with a minute remaining.
McGarrachan led the Huskies in the first half with 11 points, while Steenholdt was the top rebounder with seven. Outland had 14 points for CSUB, while Zempare had six boards.
The Huskies started the second half shaky, with three turnovers, but still found themselves down by four, 42-38, with 15:51 remaining in regulation.
A jumper by Steenholdt followed by another jumper by Strickland had the Huskies down by one, 43-42, but the 'Runners scored seven unanswered to take an eight-point lead, 50-42, with 14:27 left in regulation.
Down 59-52 with 9:18 to go, CSUB went on an 18-5 run to lead HBU, 77-57, as Shannon hit a three-pointer with just under three minutes remaining. A layup by
Ekemini Essien brought the Huskies to within 18, but that was the closest they would come.
HBU concludes its' California trip with a 2 pm central tip against UC Davis on Saturday, Dec. 21.
