DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis scored the first five points in overtime and went on from there to defeat the HBU women's basketball team, 63-58, Saturday afternoon from The Pavilion.
Monet Neal scored a career-high 16 points for HBU (3-7), besting her previous high of 10 points at Texas State last February. Neal came very close in recording a triple-double, as she recorded team highs of nine rebounds and nine steals.
Rachel Arthur scored 15 points, while
Erin McGarrachan added 12. The Huskies were without the services of leading scorer and rebounder,
Shanice Steenholdt.
UC Davis (4-7) was led by its' leading scorer, Sydnee Fipps, who scored 23 points. Heidi Johnson scored 15 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
HBU scored the game's first points, but the Aggies rattled 10-straight points, as they hit three 3-pointers, to lead 10-2 with 15:14 remaining in the opening half.
The Huskies battled back to within one on two occasions, the second time making the score 12-11 following a Neal layup at the 9:05-mark. Consecutive jumpers by McGarrachan and
Heidi Sihvola gave HBU a three-point lead, 15-12.
The Huskies led by as many as four, following a Neal layup to make the score 25-21, but the Aggies cut the deficit to one with one shot, as Fipps nailed a trey. Arthur came back and made an old-fashioned three-point play to put the Huskies back up by four, 28-24, with 25 seconds until halftime. A couple of Fipps free throws cut the lead in half, as the Huskies had the lead entering halftime, 28-26.
With the teams exchanging baskets, McGarrachan put the Huskies ahead by three with a jumper at the 17:28-mark, but UC Davis' Kelsey Harris tied the game at 32-all with a three-pointer 35 seconds later. Harris hit another trey to put the hosts ahead by three, but four-straight points by the Huskies put HBU ahead by three, 38-35, with 13:43 remaining in regulation.
McGarrachan's jumper at the 3:11-mark gave HBU a two-point lead, 52-50, but Fipps hit a jumper to mark the game's 10th tie, with two minutes to go in regulation. The Aggies had a couple of chances to win it in the waning seconds, with a couple of offensive rebounds, but couldn't put the basket in, as the two teams entered overtime.
UC Davis scored the first five points of OT to lead the Huskies, 57-52, with three minutes remaining, forcing an HBU timeout.
The Huskies battled back, as Neal hit a layup, then
Tayler Jefferson forced an Aggie turnover and hit a jumper to cut the deficit to one, 57-56, with 2:19 remaining.
The Aggies increased their lead to three before McGarrachan's jumper cut the deficit to one, 59-58, with 1:32 to go. Arthur forced a turnover and went in on a fast break, looking to give the Huskies the lead late in OT, but missed the jumper and the Aggies grabbed the rebound. UC Davis made all four of their free throws in the final 23 seconds for the win.
HBU closes 2013 hosting Huston-Tillotson on Saturday, Dec. 28 at 2 pm. The Huskies play their first conference games as a member of the Southland Conference on Jan. 2 and 4 at Oral Roberts and Central Arkansas, respectively.
