McGarrachan Sets New Career High in Loss at SHSU

Scores game-high 21 points in losing effort

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Junior forward Erin McGarrachan set a new career high with 21 points, but the HBU women's basketball team lost a non-conference game at Sam Houston State, 85-68, Tuesday evening at Johnson Coliseum.

McGarrachan's point total was a game high, while her eight rebounds led HBU (2-2). Shanice Steenholdt recorded her fourth-straight double digit point total, as she scored 16 points, with six rebounds.

Nyha Carter and Taylor Dorsey each led Sam Houston State (2-2) with 17 points, followed by Jasmine Johnson with 15. Angela Beadle had 13 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

The two teams battled back and forth for the first four minutes, before the Bearkats used a 12-2 run to take a 19-10 lead with 12:02. That run was culminated by a steal by Johnson and a three-pointer by Amanda Barnes.

SHSU led by as many as 13, 26-13 with 7:49 remaining, before the Huskies clawed back. HBU went on a 17-6 run to cut the Bearkat lead to 32-30 with just under three minutes remaining in the opening half. Steenholdt had the final five points of the run, including a three-pointer at the top of the key. The Bearkats led by no more than four the remainder of the half. A McGarrachan jumper in the waning seconds cut the deficit to two at the break, 36-34.

McGarrachan led all players with 13 points and six rebounds for the Huskies. Carter led SHSU with seven points.

SHSU started the second half on a 19-5 run midway to lead the Huskies, 55-39, with 11:25 remaining in regulation.

The Huskies made a frantic comeback with defensive pressure and timely shooting, coming as close as 11, but a Taylor Dorsey three in the corner at the 4:13-mark stopped the Huskies' momentum.

HBU will remain on the road as the Huskies take on Jackson State Friday at 6 pm, followed by a tilt at South Alabama Monday night at 7:05 pm.
