McGarrachan Leads Women’s Hoops in Loss at Jackson St.

Junior records game highs of 15 points and eight rebounds for Huskies

JACKSON, Miss. – Junior forward Erin McGarrachan had set a new personal best in points Tuesday night at Sam Houston State; three days later, she recorded game highs of 15 points and eight rebounds, but HBU lost at Jackson State, 74-50, Friday night at Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly.

For the second-straight game, McGarrachan led HBU (2-3) in both points and rebounds. Tayler Jefferson scored 11 points and finished one rebound shy of her career mark of six, set last March at Utah Valley.

Alisa Ross led Jackson State (1-4) with 13 points, while Ekwara Ndongo scored 12 and Ayanna Hardy-Fuller added 10. Ke'ra St. John pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.

The two teams battled back and forth for the first three minutes, as HBU led by no more than two and the Tigers no more than four, until the 17:35-mark, when Hardy-Fuller made a layup to give JSU a six-point lead, 16-10. The Tigers continued on their run, as they outscored the Huskies 18-7 to lead HBU by 17, 34-17, with 2:38 remaining in the first half. The Huskies cut the halftime deficit to 14, 35-21, as Ekemini Essien made a layup and McGarrachan hit a pair of free throws.

McGarrachan had nine of the Huskies' 21 points in the first half, as HBU shot just 32 percent. Shanice Steenholdt had four points, while Essien added three. Ndongo led JSU with eight points, while Ross scored seven, as the Tigers shot 42 percent from the floor.

JSU started the second half scoring the first six points to lead the Huskies by 20, 41-21. The Huskies put on the defensive pressure, as Monet Neal had two steals and Rachel Arthur had one early in the second half, but the Huskies weren't able to convert the turnovers into points.

In the 6:27-mark, Soraya Page scored her first collegiate points.  Page, playing in just her second game of the season, played in a career-high 11 minutes. Emely Lopez saw her first collegiate action.

HBU will look to regroup when the Huskies conclude their three-game road trip at South Alabama Monday evening, Nov. 25, at 7:05 pm.
