SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Houston Baptist came within one goal of host San Diego State with six minutes left in regulation, but could not get the equalizer, as the Huskies fell to the Aztecs, 3-2, on the opening day of the Courtyard Marriot SD Central Soccer Tournament Friday evening at the SDSU Sports Deck.
San Diego scored twice in the opening half, as the Aztecs outshot HBU 6-3.
Jordan Ongaro started the scoring for SDSU, as he scored just two minutes into the match, assisted by Ata Ozbay and Evyn Hewitt.
In the 40th minute, Tyler Smith scored for the Aztecs, assisted by Jose Altamirano and Robbie Friese.
HBU cut the deficit in half, as
Kristopher Tyrpak scored, assisted by
Kyle Herbison, in the 58th minute. Herbison sent a cross shot into the box that Tyrpak kicked into the back of the net.
SDSU got its two-goal advantage back just two-and-a-half minutes later, as Blake Wise sent a cross pass and Kody Duff scored just four yards out.
Christian Cruz made things interesting, as his second goal in as many games cut the Aztec deficit to one at 3-2 in the 78th minute.
Zach Pierce passed the ball to Cruz who shot the ball into the lower right corner.
SDSU outshot HBU 16-7 overall and 8-3 in shots on goal.
Thilo Borgmann and Cruz had two shots apiece. Duff led all players with four shots and three shots on goal.
Zach Harwerth suffered the loss in goal for HBU (2-2-0), allowing three goals and making three saves in 68:19.
Kevin Suarez played the final 21:41 and made two saves.
Tim Peitsch earned the win for SDSU (1-1-1), allowing two goals and making one save.
Mark Gendi got a red card late in the match and will not play in Sunday's match against the Univ. of San Diego. Kick-off is set for a 7 pm central time start.
