Volleyball Downs Chicago State to Jump Out to 2-0 Start in GWC Play

Senior outside hitter Heather Leaverton had 13 kills and 19 digs in Saturday's sweep of Chicago State.

CHICAGO – Houston Baptist senior outside hitter Heather Leaverton recorded her team-leading 10th double-double with 13 kills, only one error, and 19 digs as the Huskies rolled past Chicago State, 3-0 (25, 17, 25-15, 25-13) in Great West Conference volleyball Saturday afternoon at the Dickens Center.
 
Junior middle blocker Caiti Wenger and sophomore outside hitter Jasmine Casey each added eight kills, with Casey posting eight digs for the Huskies (11-8, 2-0 GWC). Senior setter Victoria Weatherly also posted a double-double with 29 assists, 12 digs and four kills, and sophomore middle blocker Madeline Gaffney had six kills. Sophomore libero Esther Longoria added 14 digs for HBU.
 
Alyssa Podwell and Paula Sioto each had five kills to lead Chicago State (2-16, 0-1). Mysta Townsell led the Cougars defensively with a match-high 21 digs.
 
The Huskies hit .220 for the match, while stifling the Cougars to a .018 hitting percentage. HBU outdug Chicago State, 66-51, held a 6-4 advantage in blocks and 5-2 in service aces.
 
Chicago State won the first two points of the match, but HBU scored the next six to take a 6-2 lead. The Huskies extended their lead to 16-9, but the Cougars scored four-straight points to get back to within two at 18-16. HBU answered by scoring five straight to go back up by seven, 23-16, then closed out the set, 25-17. Casey recorded six kills and five digs in the frame for the Huskies.
 
HBU jumped out to a 12-8 lead in the second, then scored three in a row to extend its advantage to seven. Leading 16-11, the Huskies scored four-straight to go up by nine and cruised to a 25-15 victory to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Leaverton led the Huskies with five kills in the set.
 
The Huskies scored five-straight points early in the third to jump ahead, 11-4, then later scored five more in a row to lead 19-8. HBU went on to close out the match, 25-13. Leaverton added five more kills in the set for the Huskies.
 
The Huskies return to action when they host Jarvis Christian Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Sharp Gym, the first of five home matches for HBU in the month of October, after playing only twice at home so far this season.
