Box Score

HOUSTON – Houston Baptist never led until the winning run crossed home in the bottom of the fifth, as HBU defeated visiting UTSA, 3-2, Wednesday afternoon from Husky Field.

The win snapped two streaks for the Huskies: it not only snapped HBU's six-game losing streak, but also snapped UTSA's eight-game winning streak against HBU.

UTSA scored the game's first run in the top of the first, as Caitlin Ivy's single up the middle scored Ashley Kappler, who started the inning with an infield single.

HBU tied the game at one in the bottom of the third as Rebecca Rademacher had a two-out hit, then scored on an RBI triple by Daniella Rodarte.

The Huskies ran into control problems in the top of the fourth, as Sarah Shotton relieved starter Keely Shuler and walked the first two batters she faced. In came Kendall Stiefel, who only allowed one run to score, inherited by Shotton.

The Huskies tied the game at two in the bottom half of the inning, thanks to control problems for the Roadrunners. Michaela Granchelli started the inning off being hit by the pitch. She advanced to second on a sac bunt by Melissa Herman. Following another hit by pitch and a walk that loaded the bases with one out, Holly Webb used a sac bunt to score M. Granchelli to tie the game.

HBU took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth, as Rademacher led off the inning with a single to left field. She advanced to second on a sac bunt by Rodarte and to third on a groundout, then scored on an RBI single by M. Granchelli.

The Huskies' only two strikeouts in the game came at an opportune time, as Stiefel struck out the first two batters in the top of the seventh, then ended the game with a fly out to left field.

Rademacher led HBU with two hits and two runs scored. Rodarte, M. Granchelli and Webb each had an RBI.

Shuler started the game and pitched 3.0 innings, giving up four hits, one earned run and one walk. Shotton pitched to two batters, walking both. Stiefel earned the win, pitching 4.0 innings and did not give up a hit, while walking four and striking out two.

Ivy led UTSA with two hits, while she and Geena Garcia each had an RBI.

Haylee Staton started the game in the circle, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out four in 3.0 innings. Katy Akins pitched 0.1 inning and gave up one earned run. Morgan Luksa took the loss, allowing two hits, one earned run and one walk in 2.2 innings.

HBU (12-20) will continue its six-game home stand with doubleheaders against Prairie View A&M on Tue., Apr. 10 and Stephen F. Austin on Wed., Apr. 11. Both DHs are scheduled for 2 pm starts.
