Huskies Swept by UH-Victoria on Senior Day

HOUSTON – Houston Baptist was swept in a doubleheader by the ninth-ranked team in the NAIA, UH-Victoria, 6-0 and 9-1 in five innings.

In game one, UH-Victoria had three-run innings in the top of the second and fourth while holding HBU to three hits in the win.

Marley Moehrig led off the second with a homer to center field. The Jaguars would tack on two unearned runs, thanks to a pair of Husky errors.

In the top of the fourth, the Jaguars had runners at second and third with nobody out, when Brittany Arredondo singled to left field, scoring both runners. With runners again at second and third still with nobody out, Ariel Gomez grounded out to the pitcher, scoring Porsha Ramos.

Melissa Herman and Callie Herrington each went 1-for-3 for HBU, while Michaela Granchelli went 1-for-2.

Sarah Shotton started and took the loss, giving up four hits, three earned runs and three walks while striking out four in 3.0+ innings. Keely Shuler pitched the remaining 4.0+ and allowed three hits, one earned run and one walk while striking out two.

Arredondo went 3-for-3 at the plate for UH-Victoria with three RBI. Kori Kocian went 1-for-2 with two runs scored.

Meagan Villegas started and earned the win, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out one in 6.0 innings. Baylea Wagener pitched the seventh and walked one batter.

In game two, UH-Victoria scored two first-inning runs off starter Beth Evans. With runners at second and third with two outs, Kelly King singled to left field, scoring both runners.

UH-Victoria added a run in the top of the second on an RBI single by Bre'Neka O'Bryant. The Huskies got one run back in the bottom of the fourth, when an RBI single by Herrington scored Mac Christensen. That score snapped the Huskies' 39.2 inning shutout streak.

UH-Victoria broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning. The Jaguars had three hits in the inning, coupled with two HBU errors.

HBU went down in order in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.

Holly Webb led HBU with two hits, while Herrington had the lone RBI.

Evans pitched the first inning and took the loss, giving up three hits and two earned runs while striking out two. Kendall Stiefel pitched 3.2 innings, allowing three hits, seven runs (zero earned) and one walk while striking out one. Shuler relieved Stiefel and pitched the final 0.1.

Six different Jaguars had one hit. King had three RBI while Kristina Droz had two.

Emily Bergstrom started in the circle and earned the win, giving up six hits and one earned run while striking out four in 4.0 innings. Wagener pitched the final inning.

HBU (14-31) will rest for a couple of weeks before heading to Farmers Branch for the Great West Conference Tournament. The third-seeded Huskies will face second-seed Nebraska Omaha, time TBA.
