HOUSTON – The Houston Baptist softball team has just four games remaining in the regular season, three of which will be at Husky Field. The Huskies' first test will be a home doubleheader against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sat., Apr. 21 beginning at 1 pm.
The Islanders defeated HBU, 3-2, on Apr. 12 in Corpus Christi. The Huskies wrap up the regular season with a single game at Houston on Wed., Apr. 25 at 6 pm and a home single contest against UH-Victoria on Sat., Apr. 28 at 1 pm. The Huskies lost a doubleheader in Victoria on Mar. 3, both in extra innings: 8-7 and 7-6.
HBU (14-27) went 1-3 earlier this week with a split at UTSA and a doubleheader sweep at Texas State.
Michaela Granchelli leads the Huskies with a .316 batting average. With a .309 average,
Melissa Herman is second in batting average and leads the team in hits (38) and is tied with M. Granchelli in RBI (18). As a team, the Huskies are hitting .255.
Beth Evans and
Kendall Stiefel both lead the pitching staff with a 2.00 ERA. Evans has walked a team-low six batters, while
Sarah Shotton has struck out a team-high 61 batters.
TAMU-Corpus Christi (15-16) is led in batting average by Laura Phillips, with a .361 mark. Cassie Carroll leads with 21 hits and 13 RBI. As a team, the Islanders are hitting .237.
In the circle, Greta Cecchetti leads with a 1.76 ERA, with seven complete games and four shutouts. She has struck out a team-high 89 batters, but has walked 24.
Houston (26-16) is led by the twosome of Reina Gabor and Melissa Gregson, who are hitting .373 and .370, respectively. Both lead the team with 44 hits. Haley Outon leads the Cougars with 12 home runs and 39 RBI. As a team, the Cougars are hitting .317.
Bailey Watts leads the pitchers with a 2.60 ERA. She leads the team with 93 strikeouts, but also leads with 53 walks.
UH-Victoria (30-6) is ranked 9th in the NAIA. Brittany Arredondo leads the Jaguars with a .450 average, 50 hits and 24 RBI.
Baylea Wagener leads the pitching staff with a 1.75 ERA. Among the starters, Emily Bergstrom is tops with a 2.18 ERA, going 18-3 with two saves. Bergstrom nearly pitched a perfect game on Apr. 15 against Northwood (Texas), giving up the only hit in the top of the seventh. Dawn Villegas has struck out a team-high 65 batters.
Apr. 21st's doubleheader against TAMU-Corpus Christi is Softball Alumni Day, while Apr. 28th's game against UH-Victoria will be senior day for
Beth Evans.
The Huskies will host the 2012 Great West Conference Tournament, held May 13-14 in Farmers Branch, Texas.
