SAN MARCOS, Texas – In the first-ever meeting between Houston Baptist and Texas State, it was the Bobcats' pitching that shone, holding HBU to six hits total in a 6-0 and 3-0 doubleheader sweep by Texas State Wednesday afternoon from Bobcat Field.

Game one was a pitching duel until the bottom of the fifth, when Texas State scored a single run, unearned.

HBU went down in order in the top of the sixth, leading up to the Bobcats' explosive inning, scoring five times on six hits. There were two Husky errors in the inning.

In the top of the seventh, Kate Maddock hit a two-out single, but could not score, as Texas State got a strikeout to end the game.

Maddock and Holly Webb each had a hit for the Huskies. Kendall Stiefel started in the circle and took the loss, giving up six hits, one earned run and one walk in 5.0 innings. Keely Shuler pitched the final inning, allowing five hits and two earned runs while striking out one.

Four Bobcats had two hits apiece. Chandler Hall went the distance in the winning effort in the circle, as she gave up allowed just two hits and zero walks while striking out 11.

In game two, Texas State scored single runs in the bottom of the third, fifth and sixth innings for the 3-0 win.

Following a one-out walk and a single, placing runners at first and second. Brittney Garcia pinch-ran for Megan Parten, who was at second. Selena Hernandez singled home Garcia, making it 1-0 Bobcats.

In the bottom of the fifth, Coralee Ramirez led off the inning with a single to right field, advanced to second on a sac bunt, and went to third on a single to left field. S. Hernandez hit sac fly, scoring Ramirez.

The Bobcats' final run came an inning later. Texas State led off the inning with a single, followed by a double, placing runners at second and third with nobody out. Beth Evans replaced starter Sarah Shotton in the circle and Evans got a quick out, but a groundout by Ramirez scored Haley Lemons.

Rebecca Rademacher, Daniella Rodarte, Michaela Granchelli, and Victoria Granchelli each had one hit for HBU. Shotton started the game and took the loss, giving up seven hits, three earned runs and one walk while striking out two in 5.0 innings. Evans pitched the final inning and did not give up a hit nor walked a batter.

Anna Hernandez and Jordan Masek each had two hits for Texas State. S. Hernandez led with two RBI.

Anne Marie Taylor went the distance in the win, giving up four hits and one walk while striking out five.

HBU (14-27) will host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a doubleheader on Sat., Apr. 21 beginning at 1 pm. Immediately after the doubleheader, there will be a Softball Alumni Reunion at Husky Field.
