Softball Shuts Out UTSA 6-0 to Earn Split with Roadrunners

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Houston Baptist used a solid complete-game performance by senior pitcher Beth Evans and the bats came alive in a 6-0 victory in game two, as the Huskies earned a doubleheader split against host UTSA Wednesday afternoon from Roadrunner Field. UTSA took game one, 6-2.

In game one, UTSA led 4-0 before the Huskies cut the deficit in half with a two-run top of the sixth. Daniella Rodarte led off the inning with a double to left-center. Two batters later, Michaela Granchelli homered to left field to make the score 4-2 UTSA.

UTSA got those two runs right back in the bottom half of the inning to lead 6-2. Following a one-out hit by pitch, Ashley Kappler made the Huskies pay with a two-run homer to left field.

Rodarte led HBU with two hits, while M. Granchelli was the leader with two RBI.

Keely Shuler started and took the loss in the circle, giving up eight hits and just one earned run, while striking out one in 4.1 innings. Sarah Shotton relieved Shuler and gave up four hits and two earned runs in 1.2 innings.

Megan Low had a great game for the Roadrunners, going 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored. Kappler and Nikki Goff each had two RBI.

Haylee Staton earned the win for UTSA, giving up five hits, two earned runs and one walk while striking out four in 5.1 innings. Morgan Luksa earned her third save of the season allowing one hit in 1.2 innings.

In game two, HBU scored twice in the top of the second, sixth and seventh innings for the shutout victory and the Huskies' second win over UTSA this season.

In the top of the second, Kate Maddock led off the inning with a double to left-center, then crossed home after a Victoria Granchelli homer.

HBU started the top of the sixth with a single and an error, placing runners on the corners with nobody out and prompting a Roadrunner pitching change. Melissa Herman, who led off the inning with a single, scored on a wild pitch. V. Granchelli reached on a fielder's choice, which scored M. Granchelli.

The Huskies increased their lead with a two-spot in the seventh. With runners at second and third with two outs, M. Granchelli singled up the middle, scoring both runners.

Maddock led HBU with two hits, while V. Granchelli had a game-high three RBI. Her sister, Victoria, had two RBI.

Evans went the distance in the win, allowing six hits and walking just one while striking out seven.

Molly Fichtner and Samantha Beeson each had two hits for UTSA. Alyssa Vordenbaum took the loss in the circle, allowing five hits, three earned runs and one walk while striking out six in 5.0 innings. Luksa relieved Vordenbaum and gave up three hits, two earned runs and two walks while whiffing one in 2.0 innings.

HBU (14-25) will conclude its road trip with a doubleheader at Texas State on Wed., Apr. 18 at 3 pm.
