Comeback Falls Short in HBU’s 3-2 Loss at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Houston Baptist fell behind 3-0 before the Huskies cut the deficit to one with a two-run double, but HBU could not get the equalizer, in a 3-2 loss at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Thursday afternoon from Chapman Field.

Nobody got a run across the board until the Islanders scored a single run in the bottom of the third. Cassie Redmon led off the third with a single to right field. After stealing second, Redmon advanced to third following a sac bunt by Hannah Schwarz, then crossed home on an RBI sac bunt by Sandy Schumann.

The Islanders increased their lead with a two-run fifth inning to make the score 3-0. The Islanders started the inning with runners at second and third and nobody out, following a double and an error. Schwarz singled to right field, scoring both runners.

HBU got to within one, 3-2, with one swing in the top of the sixth. Following consecutive walks to Daniella Rodarte and Kate Maddock, Michaela Granchelli doubled to left-center, bringing home both runners.

In the top of the seventh, Holly Webb hit a two-out base hit to left field, but the Huskies could not bring her home, as the Islanders got a strike out to end the game.

M. Granchelli led HBU with two hits and two RBI. HBU was held to just four hits, as Maddock and Webb each had one.

Keely Shuler went the distance in the losing effort, allowing six hits and two earned runs while striking out one. She did not walk a batter.

Schwarz went 2-for-2 at the plate for the Islanders with two RBI. Jordan Trujillo also went the distance, earning the win. She gave up four hits, two earned runs and two walks while striking out four.

HBU (13-24) will head to central Texas for four games next week, starting off with a doubleheader at UTSA on Tue., Apr. 17 at 3 pm, then conclude the road trip with a doubleheader at Texas State on Wed., Apr. 18 at 3 pm.
