HOUSTON – Houston Baptist's bats fell silent Wednesday afternoon at Husky Field, being held to one run and 10 hits combined, as visiting Stephen F. Austin State swept a doubleheader from the Huskies, 3-1 and 3-0.
HBU scored game one's first run, an RBI single by
Michaela Granchelli that scored
Rebecca Rademacher in the bottom of the third.
SFA scored twice in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. Following a lead-off walk to Amber Price, Elizabeth Arana hit a one-out, RBI double to score Price and knot the game at one. One batter later, Jessica Arana singled up the middle to score E. Arana.
Keely Shuler replaced starter
Sarah Shotton and got the next two batters out to end the inning.
The Ladyjacks got some insurance with one run in the top of the sixth. Cadie Weaver was hit by a pitch with one out. Following a pop-up by J. Arana for the second out, Kailtyn Mixon doubled to left-center, scoring Weaver.
HBU had a golden opportunity to do some damage in the bottom of the seventh, as the Huskies started the inning with a
Holly Webb single up the middle followed by an infield single by
Callie Herrington. But SFA starter Angela White got a pop-up, a fly out and a ground out to end the game.
Webb led HBU with two hits. M. Granchelli had the lone RBI. Shotton started and took the loss, giving up three hits, two earned runs and one walk while striking out three in 3.1 innings. Shuler pitched the remaining 3.2, giving up three hits and one earned run while striking out one.
J. Arana and Linda Linares each led SFA with two hits. E. Arana, J. Arana and Mixon had an RBI apiece. White went the distance in the win, giving up seven hits, one earned run and two walks.
In game two, SFA's two-run first inning proved to be the difference, as Carlie Thomas was dominant in the circle.
Bethany Brown started the game with a single through the left side. Following a sac bunt that moved Brown to second, Faith Hoisager doubled to right, bringing home Brown to make it 1-0 Ladyjacks. Two-straight singles brought home Hoisager to make it 2-0.
Beth Evans, making her first appearance in the circle in a month, got out of the jam with a fielder's choice and a ground out.
HBU was held hitless until the bottom of the fourth, when
Kate Maddock led off the inning with a double to right-center.
Melissa Herman singled to left field, giving the Huskies runners at first and second with just one out, but Thomas got two flyouts to center to end the threat.
SFA got an insurance run in the top of the sixth, as Mixon had an RBI single.
In the bottom of the seventh,
Victoria Granchelli started things off with a double, but the Huskies were doubled up with a flyout to center and a force out at second. Thomas got
Holly Webb out on strikes to end the game.
HBU was held to just three hits in the game, as Maddock, Herman and V. Granchelli each had one. Evans started the game and took the loss, giving up nine hits and three earned runs while not walking a batter in 6.0 innings. Shotton pitched the last inning, giving up two hits.
Thomas went the distance in the win, giving up three hits and two hits while striking out four.
HBU (13-23) will play a single game at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tomorrow, Thu., Apr. 12 at 1 pm. The Huskies will play doubleheaders at UTSA (4/17) and Texas State (4/18) before returning home for a DH against TAMU-Corpus Christi on Sat., Apr. 21 at 1 pm.
