HOUSTON – Houston Baptist softball lost a home doubleheader to Sam Houston State Wednesday afternoon from Husky Field. Game one's score was 5-0 and game two's result was 6-3.
In game one, HBU was held to just three hits on a very good performance by Bearkat hurler Tomi Garrison.
It was 1-0 SHSU on a first-inning RBI single by Cecilia Castillo.
The score remained that way until the top of the seventh, when the Bearkats erupted for four runs. The previous inning, the Huskies had a runner in scoring position with just one out, and two runners on with two outs, but was unable to get the equalizer. The highlight of the Bearkats' seventh inning was Shelbi Tucker's triple, which brought home three runners.
In the bottom of the seventh, HBU got a one-out double by
Kate Maddock, but Garrison got two pop ups to end the threat and the game.

Callie Herrington each had a hit for HBU.
Sarah Shotton started the game and took the loss, allowing 10 hits, five earned runs and two walks while striking out five in 6.2 innings.
Beth Evans pitched the remaining 0.1.
Alyssa Coggins and Tori Benivedez each had three-hit games for SHSU, while Tucker led with three RBI. Garrison allowed the aforementioned three hits, while walking just two and striking out two in 7.0 innings.
In game two, SHSU started the game with a three-run first inning on a three-run homer by Tucker.
HBU got one of the runs back in the bottom of the second as Maddock reached on an error, advanced to second on a sac bunt by
Michaela Granchelli, then scored on a single up the middle by
Mac Christensen.
SHSU scored three more runs in the top of the third to make it 6-1 Bearkats, as Tucker had a sac fly RBI and Sarah Allison hit a two-RBI double.
The Huskies scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit in half, 6-3, as Herman and M. Granchelli each had RBI singles.
In the bottom of the sixth,
Rebecca Rademacher hit a two-out double down the left-field line, then advanced to third on a fielding error. But she couldn't cross home, as the Bearkats got a groundout to end the inning.
There was a six-minute rain delay as the two teams entered the seventh inning. The game was eventually called due to weather and darkness, with the Bearkats victorious.
Rademacher led HBU with three hits in four at-bats, while Herman went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Keely Shuler started and took the loss, allowing eight hits and six earned runs while striking out two in 2.1 innings.
Kendall Stiefel relieved Shuler and pitched the remaining 3.2, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out two.
HBU (6-9) will head to Jackson, Miss., to play a three-game series against Jackson State. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Fri., Mar. 8 beginning at 4 pm. The teams will conclude the series with a single game on Sat. beginning at 11 am.
