VICTORIA, Texas – Houston Baptist had comfortable leads entering the seventh inning in both games of a doubleheader against host UH-Victoria, but the Jaguars never said die and defeated the Huskies in eight innings, 8-7 and 7-6.
HBU drops to 6-7 on the season while UH-Victoria, which is the 10th-ranked team in the NAIA, improves to 8-2. It is the first-ever sweep by the Jaguars over the Huskies.
In game one, HBU led 3-0 entering the bottom of the third on three RBIs on two hits by
Michaela Granchelli, when UH-Victoria got on the board with a single run.
The Jaguars used a three-run fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead, but the Huskies rallied with a four-run top of the seventh to lead the Jaguars, 7-4.
Daniella Rodarte started the inning with a single and advanced to second on an error. She scored on a single by
Victoria Granchelli. Following a M. Granchelli single that put the Granchellis on the corners,
Kate Maddock hit a three-run homer to give the Huskies a three-run lead entering the bottom of the seventh.
The Jaguars started the seventh with Porsha Ramos reaching base on an error and Brittany Arredondo getting on base with a single. Marley Moehrig tied the game with one swing, with a home run to left field. The Huskies got out of the inning with no more damage done.
The Huskies got a one-out walk in the top of the eighth, but the Jaguars got a strike out and a line drive caught by the third baseman to get out of the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, Jena West had a pinch-hit single and was replaced by Kara Waukau. After a strikeout, Ramos doubled to right-center field, placing runners at second and third with just one out. Arredondo hit a single, bringing home Waukau and ending the game.
Rodarte and M. Granchelli led the Huskies by going 3-for-5 at the plate. Both M. Granchelli and Maddock had three RBI.
Sarah Shotton started the game and lasted 6.0+ innings, allowing seven hits, five earned runs and two walks while striking out 10.
Keely Shuler relieved Shotton and took the loss, allowing four hits, one earned run and striking out two in 1.1.
In game two, HBU took a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but UH-Victoria scored six runs in the seventh to tie the game and scored a run in the bottom of the eighth for the improbably comeback win.
After a scoreless first, the Huskies scored twice in the second with an RBI single by
Holly Webb and an RBI single by
Rebecca Rademacher.
The Huskies erupted for four runs in the top of the third, thanks to two 2-run homers by Maddock and
Beth Evans.
In the bottom of the seventh, UH-Victoria brought 10 batters to the plate, as Moehrig had two RBI, Ashley Shannon had two RBI and Ashley Winegeart had two RBI.
In the top of the eighth, the Huskies had a runner at third with two outs, but
Melissa Herman flew out to right field.
The Jaguars ended the game in the bottom half of the inning, as the Jaguars had a single and a walk placing runners at first and second with one out. A pop-up gave the Huskies two outs, but it was deep enough to advance both runners 60 feet. Shannon singled to center, scoring Ramos.
Evans led HBU at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Kendall Stiefel went the distance and gave up 13 hits, just three earned runs and four walks while striking out two.
Shannon led the Jaguars by going 3-for-5 with three RBI and one run scored. Emily Bergstrom started the game and lasted just 2.0+ innings, giving up seven hits, five earned runs and one walk while striking out one. Villegas relieved Bergstrom and earned the win, giving up five hits, one earned run while striking out one in 6.0 innings.
HBU (6-7) will host Sam Houston State on Wed., Mar. 7 at 2 pm in a doubleheader.
