KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Houston Baptist started day two of the Rebel Spring Games with a 5-0 win over Columbia, then completed the day sweep with a 5-2 win over Fairleigh Dickinson Friday afternoon.
Against the Lions, there was no scoring until the Huskies erupted for five fifth-inning runs for the win.
Once again, it was a pitcher's duel, against HBU's
Keely Shuler and Columbia's Kalli Schultea. Entering HBU's half of the fifth inning, Columbia had three hits and HBU had one.
In the bottom of the second, HBU was in business with runners at first and second with one out. But Columbia got out of the inning with a line-drive to the shortstop, who tagged
Melissa Herman going to third and tossed it to the second baseman for the force out.
In the bottom of the fifth, HBU sent nine batters to the plate.
Mac Christensen started things off with an infield single. She advanced to second on a
Holly Webb sac bunt, then scored on an RBI double by
Callie Herrington. Following a
Daniella Rodarte single that put runners at the corners, Herrington scored and Rodarte advanced to second following a wild pitch.
Kate Maddock singled, driving home Rodarte. Herman doubled, advancing Maddock to third, and she then scored on a Lion error. The Huskies scored their final run on an RBI single by
Victoria Granchelli, scoring Maddock. The Huskies ended the inning with five runs on six hits.
That was all the support Shuler needed, as she held the Lions hitless the final two innings, as Columbia went down in order in both innings.
Herman and Herrington each had two hits for HBU, with Herman going 2-for-2 and Herrington going 2-for-3. Four different Huskies had an RBI.
Shuler earned the win in a complete-game effort. She gave up three hits and one walk while striking out one. It was her sixth-career complete-game shutout and her third this season.
Emily Snodgrass, Morgan Cook and Kayla Shimoda each had a hit for Columbia (2-12). Schultea took the loss, allowing six hits, four earned runs and two walks, while striking out one, in 4.2 innings. Tristin Moone relieved her and gave up two hits in 1.1 innings.
Against Fairleigh Dickinson, all of the Huskies' five runs came in the first three innings.
In the top of the first,
Rebecca Rademacher started the game with a hit by a pitch. She advanced to second on a sac bunt and scored by an RBI single by Herman. Maddock, who had reached base on a walk, later scored on an RBI single by V. Granchelli to make it 2-0 Huskies.
FDU got one of the runs back in the bottom half of the inning, as Cindy Zamudio scored on an RBI hit by Jordan Needle.
HBU scored a single run in the top of the second thanks to an RBI single by Maddock, and scored twice more in the top of the third to lead the Knights, 5-1.
FDU scored a single run in the bottom of the sixth, but that's all the closer it could get.
Holly Webb went 3-for-3 at the plate for HBU, while Rademacher had two RBI.
Kendall Stiefel went the distance and earned the win, giving up 10 hits, two earned runs and one walk while striking out one.
Four Knights had two hits apiece. Maire Shaughnessy started the game and took the loss, giving up six hits, five earned runs and two walks while striking out one in just 2.0 innings. Caitlin Bradac relieved Shaughnessy and allowed five hits and one walk while whiffing four in 5.0 innings.
HBU (9-13) will play a single game at Stetson on Sun., Mar. 18, beginning at 12 pm central, before returning home to host Texas State in a single game on Wed., Mar. 21 at 3 pm.
