JACKSON, Miss. – Houston Baptist took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth, but host Jackson State rallied for three runs to defeat the Huskies, 5-4, to take the three-game series two games to one, Saturday morning from JSU Softball Complex.

The Lady Tigers took the early lead after the first inning. Wendi Reed started the bottom of the first with a walk, stole second, then scored on an RBI single by Sabeana Romero.

HBU took a 2-1 lead with a two-run second inning. The Huskies started the inning with two walks to Melissa Herman and Victoria Granchelli. Following an infield single by Michaela Granchelli loading the bases, Herman scored on a lineout and V. Granchelli scored on a Lady Tiger error.

JSU scored a single run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at two apiece. Janell Plaza doubled to left-field and scored on a two-out RBI single by Breea Jamerson.

Nobody could break the tie until the top of the fifth, when HBU scored twice to take a 4-2 lead. Callie Herrington led off the inning with a single and advanced on a sac bunt by Rebecca Rademacher. With two outs, Kate Maddock singled, advancing Herrington to third, and Herman was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. V. Granchelli singled up the middle, scoring Herrington and Maddock.

In the bottom of the sixth, with one out, JSU got two singles, putting runners at first and second. Plaza hit a double to left, scoring Amanda Vasquez. With runners at second and third, pinch-hitter Tahlisa Blosser hit an RBI single that brought home Jasmine Warren. Following Blosser getting thrown out trying to steal for the second out, Reed hit an RBI single to center that brought home Plaza, giving the Lady Tigers a 5-4 lead.

HBU was in business in the bottom of the seventh, with Maddock at second and Herman at first with two outs, but V. Granchelli popped up to end the game.

Six Huskies had one hit, as V. Granchelli led with two RBI.

Sarah Shotton started the game and took the loss, pitching 5.2 innings and giving up 11 hits, five earned runs and two walk while striking out two. Keely Shuler relieved Shotton and pitched 0.1.

Plaza went 3-for-3 for JSU, while Vasquez and Warren each had two hits.

Jamerson started the game and allowed five hits, three earned runs and three walks while striking out one in 5.0 innings. LeEthel Guillory pitched the remaining 2.0 innings and earned the win, giving up one hit and one walk while striking out three.

HBU (7-11) will host Buffalo in a doubleheader at Husky Field on Tue., Mar. 13. First pitch is set for a 2 pm start.
