HOUSTON – Houston Baptist lost a doubleheader to visiting Northwestern State, as the Huskies lost game one, 4-3, and game two, 3-1, Wednesday afternoon from Husky Field.
In game one, HBU scored the game's first run, as
Rebecca Rademacher led off the bottom of the first with a single down the right-field line. After advancing to second on a
Daniella Rodarte sac bunt, she scored on an RBI single by
Melissa Herman.
NSU took a 3-1 lead in the top of the second, as the Lady Demons had runners at second and third with one out. Brianna Rodriguez hit a two-run single, as she advanced to second on the throw home. The very next batter, Candice Biggs, doubled down the left-field line, bringing home Rodriguez.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Huskies were threatening, having the bases loaded and just one out.
Callie Herrington tied the game at three with one swing, as she roped a liner down the right-field line, bringing home both
Kate Maddock and Rademacher.
Nobody could score until the Lady Demons' half of the fifth inning, as Brittany Virgoe reached base on a fielder's choice, stole second, and crossed home plate on an RBI single by Cheyenne DeLaGarza.
The Huskies had a chance to tie or take the lead in the bottom of the sixth, having runners at the corners with two outs. But NSU got out of the inning with no damage after a groundout.
Seven Huskies had one hit, while Herman was tops with two RBI. Rademacher had two runs scored.
Kendall Stiefel took the loss as she went the distance, allowing seven hits, three earned runs and five walks.
Seven Lady Demons also had one hit, as Rodriguez had two RBI and one run scored.
Brooke Boening earned the win in the circle, allowing two hits and two walks in 5.0 innings, striking out one.
In game two, NSU took a 2-0 lead with a two-run top of the third. Following a Samantha Roberts with two outs, Rodriguez hit a two-run homer.
The Huskies got one of the runs back in the bottom half of the inning, as
Michaela Granchelli tripled, then scored on a sac bunt by Rademacher.
The Lady Demons added to their lead with a single run in the top of the fourth, as Rodriguez led off the inning with a double. Pinch-runner Shenequia Abby advanced to third after a sac bunt, then scored on a sac fly by Cali Burke.
HBU had a golden opportunity to tie the game, with runners at second and third with two outs, but the Lady Demons ended the game with an infield popup.
Herman led HBU going 2-for-3 in game two, while Rademacher had the lone RBI.
Keely Shuler started the game and took the loss, allowing seven hits, three earned runs and one walk in 3.2 innings.
Sarah Shotton pitched the remaining 3.1, giving up four hits.
HBU (4-5) will host Texas Southern in a doubleheader on Fri., Mar. 3 at Husky Field. First pitch is at 2 pm.
