HOUSTON – Houston Baptist was with North Dakota step-by-step for most of the night, but the Huskies could not pull off the upset, falling to UND, 57-36, Saturday evening in Sharp Gym.
HBU forced 18 North Dakota turnovers and held the Fighting Sioux to 31 percent from the floor in the first half, 39 percent in the game.
Devyn Weymouth led HBU (1-24, 0-8 GWC) with 13 points, followed by
Joselyn Pugh with 12.
Maisie Elston set a new career high with nine rebounds.
Brittany Barton finished one steal shy of her career high of five she set at Navy back in December.
Allyssa Wall and Nicole Smart each scored a game-high 14 points for North Dakota (18-10, 8-1 GWC), who has now won nine-straight games. Wall grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Emily Evers had three points, two rebounds, three assists and four blocks.
North Dakota scored the game's first six points, but the Huskies battled back, outscoring the Sioux 9-2 to take its first lead of the game, 9-8, following a
Tayler Jefferson steal and layup at the 10:16-mark.
UND led by as many as three, 12-9, but HBU tied the game at 12-all with a layup by Jefferson and a free throw by Pugh.
The two teams tied for the fourth time in the game, 17-17, with 3:47 remaining in the first half before UND closed out the half with a 9-2 run for its largest lead of the half, seven, 26-19. Jefferson was injured with two minutes left in the first half and never returned.
Pugh finished the first half tied for the half-high in points, with eight points, along with UND's Smart. Charnise Mothershed led UND with six rebounds, while Elston was tops for the Huskies with five.
HBU started the second half on a 6-2 run to cut the deficit to three, 28-25, with 17:30 left in regulation, as Barton, Weymouth and Pugh each hit jumpers.
The Huskies came as close as six, 37-31, following a three-pointer by
Olivia Madison, but UND closed out the game on a 20-5 run for the 57-36 verdict.
HBU will close out the regular season at Utah Valley on Tue., Feb. 28 at 2 pm central and at UT-Pan American on Sat., Mar. 3 at 7 pm.
