HOUSTON – Utah Valley used a 14-5 run late in the game to push past Houston Baptist, 62-41, Thursday evening at Sharp Gym.
Devyn Weymouth tied a career-high for HBU (1-23, 0-7 GWC), as she scored 16 points. She also led the team with nine rebounds and finished second with two steals.
Tayler Jefferson also tied a career high with 11 points. She finished with three rebounds, two assists and three steals.
Taylor Huber led Utah Valley (13-12, 5-2 GWC) with 13 points, followed by Jenna Johnson with 12. The Huskies held three-time Great West Conference Player of the Week, Sammie Jensen, in check, holding her to just six points and five rebounds.
HBU started the game hitting the first two baskets, a layup by Jefferson and a jumper by
Joselyn Pugh. Following a Jensen jumper, Jefferson hit a jumper, giving the Huskies their four-point lead back, 6-2, with 17:05 left in the first half.
Utah rattled off five-straight points on a three-pointer by Whitney Jenkins and a layup by Kaycee Mansfield to give the Wolverines a three-point lead, 9-6, with 13:38 remaining.
Utah Valley pulled ahead to as many as six points, but the Huskies cut the deficit to three, 15-12, on a three-pointer by Weymouth.
Following the third media timeout of the first half, UVU went on an 8-4 run in the final 7:55 to lead the Huskies by 12, 28-16, at the break.
Weymouth and Jefferson each paced HBU with six points, while Pugh was tops on the glass with five rebounds. Huber and Johnson led UVU with eight points each, while Jensen and Erika Newbold each had four rebounds.
Utah Valley's Jenkins hit a three-pointer to open the second half, giving the visitors a 15-point lead, 31-16. Weymouth answered with a three of her own less than a minute after Jenkins' trey.
The two teams battled for most of the second half, with Utah Valley leading by no more than 18 and no fewer than 13. The Huskies cut the deficit to 12 after a trey by Weymouth to make the score 40-28 with 10:39 remaining, but UVU used an 11-4 run to lead by 19, 51-32, with 7:23 remaining.
HBU came as close as 16 the rest of the way following a three-pointer by Jefferson with 4:04 remaining, but Utah Valley went on an 11-4 run in the final minutes to defeat the Huskies.
