2012 BCA Football Report Card

INDIANAPOLIS – Houston Baptist University received an “A” grade from the Black Coaches & Administration in its annual Hiring Report Card for NCAA FBS and FCS head football coach positions. The Huskies hired Vic Shealy as the program's first head coach in early April.

“We are supportive of the work of the BCA and we affirm strongly their core values and work to support them,” HBU President Dr. Robert B. Sloan Jr. said.

“We are very happy the BCA has recognized our efforts during a very thorough process and for the breadth of candidates who were considered for the head football coach position,” HBU Director of Athletics Steve Moniaci said.

Thirty-nine schools participated in this year's study, 26 FBS institutions and 13 FCS institutions, which includes HBU. Twenty-one schools, including HBU, received A's, seven received B's, seven received C's, one received a D and three received F's. The report, which was first introduced in 2004, was authored by Dr. Richard Lapchick, the Director of The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport at the University of Central Florida.

The survey is graded on four criteria: communication (direct telephone communication with the Executive Director of the BCA  and/or NCAA Director of Leadership Development), search committee (percentage of minorities on committee), candidates (percentage of minorities who received an on-campus interview) and time frame (duration of search and hiring process). HBU received an A in communication, a B in search committee, a C in candidates interviewed and an A in time frame.

The Huskies will compete in its first season in the fall of 2013, followed by its first official season of NCAA competition when it enters the Southland Conference in 2014.
