HOUSTON – Houston Baptist will play a pair of east coast teams as the Huskies will participate in the TD Bank Classic, hosted by the University of Vermont, from Nov. 30-Dec. 1.
This will mark the second meeting all-time between the Huskies and Catamounts, and the first meeting against Rhode Island. The Huskies lost to Vermont last season, 60-47, in the HBU Husky Classic. Tip-off against Vermont is 6 pm CST on Fri., Nov. 30. The Huskies will conclude the tournament with a 1 pm CST tip against Rhode Island on Sat., Dec. 1.
HBU (2-6) shot a season-best 53% from the floor, but UT Arlington outscored the Huskies 7-2 in the final two minutes to pull away and defeat HBU, 77-71, on Nov. 27.
Shanice Steenholdt once again led all scorers with 22 points and was tied for the game high with eight rebounds. She also had three blocks.
Tayler Jefferson scored 14 points while setting a new career high with four 3-pointers made.
Laila Suleiman led UT Arlington with 19 points, while Aron Garcia had 14 points and eight boards for the Mavericks.
Steenholdt averages a double-double of 17.8 points and 10.8 rebounds per game. Steenholdt is shooting 52% percent from the floor, and also leads the team with 11 blocks and 24 steals. Jefferson is second on the squad with 10.8 ppg. She also leads the team with a 42% three-point percentage and 89% free-throw percentage.
Erin McGarrachan nearly averages a double-double with 9.7 ppg and 7.0 rpg.
Vermont (2-5) lost its third-straight game, falling to host Fairfield, 51-47, on Nov. 27.
Lauren Buschmann led Vermont with 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting. She was tied with Lauren Wheeler with five rebounds. Kaylea Britton came off the bench to score 12 points.
Katie Ciznyski led all players with 19 points and six rebounds for the Stags.
On the season, Buschmann leads the Catamounts with 10.7 points per game, while Tierra Shumpert is second with 10.1 ppg. Shanai Heber leads all players with 7.8 rpg.
Rhode Island (2-4) lost to Boston University, 54-29, on Nov. 27. The Rams play Drexel on Friday before playing the Huskies.
Samantha Tabakman came off the bench to score a team-high nine points with a game-high 15 rebounds in the loss to BU. Chantell Alford scored a game-high 17 points for BU.
On the season, Tayra Melendez leads the Rams with 9.8 points per game, while Tabakman nearly averages a double-double, with 7.3 points and a team-high 10.2 rebounds per game.
