Stephen F. Austin's Big 7th Inning Shuts Door on HBU

Huskies record three hits in non-conference road loss.

Box Score

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin State scored five runs in the seventh inning to break open what had been an outstanding pitcher's duel to turn back Houston Baptist, 6-0, in non-conference baseball Tuesday afternoon at Jaycees Field.

Junior rightfielder Luke Clements doubled, while junior centerfielder David Pfuntner and senior first baseman Beau Warren each singled for the only three hits for the Huskies (0-13). Junior third baseman Robbie Buller went 0-for-4 to snap his seven-game hitting streak.

Riley Huble led the Lumberjacks (8-5), going 3-for-4 with a double, while Hunter Dozier went 2-for-3 with a double. Garrett Smith and Darren Crabtree each drove in a pair of runs for SFA.

Zack Taylor (2-1) got the win for SFA, allowing just one hit and striking out three in five innings. Sophomore Tyler McCarty (0-3) took the loss for HBU, allowing only one run on three hits through six innings, but four runs on four hits in the seventh.

The Lumberjacks scored in the bottom of the first as Bryson Myles was hit by a pitch to lead off the game, stole second and third, and scored on a groundout by Crabtree. The Huskies didn't have a baserunner in the game until freshman second baseman Tanner Kalina drew a two-out walk and Warren followed with the Huskies' first hit of the game.

HBU threatened in the sixth as Pfuntner singled with one out and Clements doubled to put a pair of runners in scoring position, but the Huskies couldn't scratch across the tying run.

In the seventh, Dozier led off with a double and Bryce Cummings walked. Michael Haynes reached on a bunt single and an error on the play scored Dozier. After Myles was again hit by a pitch, Smith smacked a two-run single to left. Crabtree added an RBI double and Max Lamantia reached on a fielder's choice to plate the final run.

The Huskies return to action when they hit the road to face No. 7 TCU Friday through Sunday at TCU Diamond.
