South Dakota Dials Long Distance for Win Over HBU, 96-87

Huskies’ four seniors combine for 67 points in final home game.

HOUSTON – Houston Baptist couldn't cool the hot hand of South Dakota's Louie Krogman, who hit 10 of the team's 16 3-pointers to score 37 points, and propel the Coyotes to a 96-87 victory over Houston Baptist in the regular-season and Great West Conference finale Saturday night at Sharp Gym.

 

The Huskies' four seniors left it all on the floor in their final home game as guard Andrew Gonzalez led HBU (4-25, 2-10 GWC) with 26 points to go with eight rebounds. Gonzalez hit all 15 of his free throws and moved into sole possession of 14th on the Huskies' all-time scoring list. Guard Michael Moss came within one point of his career high with 23 points and pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds to go with four assists. He also had one steal to extend his streak to 30 straight games with at least one dating back to last season. Forward Fred Hinnenkamp scored 12 points, and guard Shawn Echols had six points before leaving the game with 6:25 left in the first half after trying to draw a charge under the basket. Junior forward Terry Bembry had his fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and tied his career high with 13 rebounds.

 

Krogman hit 13-of-20 from the field and 10-of-14 from behind the arc for South Dakota (16-14, 7-5). Jake Thomas hit 4-of-8 3-pointers to finish with 14 points, while Steve Tecker had 12 ponts. Kendall Cutler had 11 points and eight assists, and Charlie Westbrook also had 11 points. Trevor Gruis led the Coyotes with nine rebounds and three blocks.

 

Gonzalez opened the second-half scoring with a turnaround jumper and Moss hit the first of two free throws to get the Huskies within one. Thomas answered back with a three and Westbrook's 3-point play put South Dakota back up by five. Back-to-back jumpers by Hinnenkamp cut the Coyotes' lead to one at 55-54, but they once again answered to lead by five.

 

HBU finally got over the hump as Moss found Hinnenkamp for a fastbreak layup, which resulted in a 3-point play to give the Huskies a 63-61 lead, but Krogman nailed three-straight threes on the other end to put the Coyotes back on top by seven. The Huskies scored six straight to get back within one at 70-69, but Thomas hit a three from the top of the key to give the Coyotes a 75-69 lead with 6:21 left in the game. Krogman remained hot nailing four more threes, his 10th giving South Dakota its largest lead of the game at 90-77 with 2:33 left in the game.  

 

Krogman's 3-point play with 10:40 left in the first half put South Dakota up by six and another 3-point play by Tecker with 6:25 left game the Coyotes a 35-26 lead. Bembry scored five straight for to cut a 10-point deficit in half with under four minutes to go, but the Coyotes answered right back and Krogman hit back-to-back threes to give South Dakota its largest lead of the half at 46-35 with 1:52 left. The Huskies fought back and scored the last eight points of the half, capped by Hinnenkamp's three with nine seconds left, to make the score 49-45 at the break.

 

Moss was the catalyst for the Huskies with 16 points and five rebounds at the break, while Gonzalez, who hit a three in the first minute of the game and went 17 minutes without scoring, heated up for seven in the final two minutes to finish with 10 by halftime. Krogman led the Coyotes with 14 points in the half, hitting 3-of-5 from behind the arc, while Tecker added 12.

 

South Dakota shot 50 percent from the field and 57.1 percent (16-for-28) from behind the arc, while HBU shot 39.7 percent from the field, but only 21.4 percent (3-for-14) from long range. The Huskies missed only one free throw in 27 attempts, while the Coyotes made 14-of-22. HBU outrebounded South Dakota, 52-32, including 22 offensive boards. Both teams protected the ball well as there were only 21 turnovers between them for the game.

 
The Huskies will be seeded seventh in the Great West Conference Tournament and will play second-seeded NJIT in the first round Thursday at 3:30 p.m. CST at the McKay Events Center in Orem, Utah.
