Huskies Conclude Home Stand Against Utah Valley Saturday

HOUSTON – After falling to conference-leading Chicago State on Thursday, the HBU women's basketball team will square off against reigning Great West Conference tournament champion, Utah Valley, on Saturday, Feb. 5, at 5:15 pm in Sharp Gym.

Utah Valley leads the all-time series, 2-0, winning both meetings last season. The Wolverines won the inaugural meeting, 81-69, in Utah. Taniqua Hollis led the Huskies with 16 points while Jamie Spriggs came off the bench to score 15. Shirolacille Holloway scored 10 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Jenna Johnson led the Wolverines with 20 points on 6-of-14 shooting and 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. Julie Smith had 13 points, five rebounds, three assists, three steals and three blocks.

Utah Valley won the second meeting in Sharp Gym, 70-59. Destini Texada had 14 points and 14 rebounds for the Huskies, while Smith scored 24 points and shot 50 percent from the field (10-for-20) for UVU. Saturday is the first meeting on the season between the two teams, as HBU will conclude the series on Feb. 26 in Orem.

HBU (2-19, 0-6 GWC) lost to Chicago State on Thursday, 79-50, as the Cougars remain perfect in conference play. Spriggs and Megan Green each scored 14 points to lead the Huskies, as the 14 points were a season-high for Green. Texada, who was shut out in the first half, scored six points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, while recording a season-best six assists. CSU's Courtney Waldon led all scorers with 20 points while Tressa Beckel and Caila Desroches each grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

HBU is seventh in the Great West in scoring offense (51.9 ppg) and sixth in scoring defense (78.1 ppg). The Huskies are fourth in rebounding offense (35.9 rpg) and sixth in rebounding defense (42.8 rpg).
Texada is ranked eighth in the conference in scoring, averaging 12.8 ppg, and is third in rebounding, averaging 8.3 boards a game. Spriggs is 15th in scoring, averaging 9.3 ppg and Tia Jackson is 21st, scoring 7.5 points a game.

Texada is ranked third in field-goal percentage, hitting 53 percent of her shots, while Spriggs is ranked fifth, hitting 49 percent of her shots.

Jackson leads the Huskies in assists, averaging 3.6 helpers per game, which is tied for fourth in the league. Jackson is also ranked 10th in steals, averaging 1.4 picks a game.

Green is ranked seventh in the conference in three-point field goals made, as she averages 1.5 a game. Texada ranks sixth and second in offensive rebounds and defensive rebounds, respectively. She is averaging 2.5 offensive boards a game and 5.8 defensive rebounds a game.

Utah Valley (3-18, 1-5 GWC) earned its first conference victory on Thursday, defeating UT-Pan American by a score of 71-62. Sammie Jensen led the Wolverines with 21 points and 16 rebounds, while Abbie Beutler dished out a career-high 10 assists. Jenna Johnson scored 19 points and Kim Bell contributed 14. UTPA's Ce'Monay Newell scored a game-high 28 points while Donna Jackson scored eight and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.

Utah Valley is ranked fifth in the league in scoring offense (59.3 ppg) and fifth in scoring defense (72.7 ppg). The Wolverines are third in rebounding offense (38.2 rpg) and first in rebounding defense (35.8 rpg).

The Wolverines are ranked second in the conference in free-throw percentage, hitting 71 percent of their shots. They are third in three-point field goal percentage defense, as opponents are shooting 32 percent from beyond the arc.

Jensen leads the Wolverines in scoring, averaging 12.6 ppg, which is ninth-best in the league. Johnson is ranked 12th in the league, averaging 11.7 ppg. Beutler and Bell are 21st and 23rd in scoring, respectively, as Beutler averages 7.6 ppg and Bell is averaging 7.4 ppg. Kaycee Mansfield is 24th in the conference, averaging 7.3 ppg.

Jensen leads the conference in rebounding, averaging 9.8 boards a game, while Kali Roche is eighth, averaging 6.0 rpg.

Beutler is second in assists, averaging 4.1 per game. Johnson is ranked ninth in three-point field goal percentage, hitting 34 percent of her shots.

HBU and Utah Valley have faced six common opponents: Lamar, Chicago State, North Dakota, South Dakota, NJIT and UTPA. HBU is 0-7 and UVU is 1-6. Both teams have played Chicago State twice. Both the Huskies and Wolverines lost to Lamar, a team that made the NCAA Tournament a year ago and is currently 16-5 and 5-2 in Southland Conference play, good for second place in the East Division.
