HOUSTON – Houston Baptist senior guard Andrew Gonzalez scored a career-high 36 points as the Huskies rallied at the end of regulation then held on in overtime for a 97-94 victory over Chicago State in Great West Conference basketball Thursday night at Sharp Gym.
Gonzalez hit 11-of-16 from the field, including 4-of-7 from three-point range and 10-of-16 from the free throw line for the Huskies (3-18, 2-4 GWC). Junior forward Terry Bembry also had a career-high with 22 points on 10-of-13 from the floor and also added 10 rebounds for his fourth career double-double. Senior forward Fred Hinnenkamp added 14, while senior guard Shawn Echols had 13. Senior guard Michael Moss had a career-high 13 assists.
Carl Montgomery led Chicago State (5-17, 2-4) with 35 points and 16 rebounds off the bench. Jonathan Montgomery had 19 points, while Victor Scott had 12 and Antonio Lofton had 11, all from the free-throw line.
The Huskies went on a 10-0 run within the last three minutes to take a two-point lead, but Carl Montgomery followed Jonathan Montgomery's airball on a three-point attempt with a layup to tie the game, 82-82, with two seconds left.
In overtime, Hinnenkamp started the scoring with a jumper and Gonzalez made a layup to give the Huskies a four-point lead, but Carl Montgomery answered back with a layup but missed a chance for a three-point play. An Echols free throw put HBU up, 87-84, and Gonzalez made a steal then a floater on the ensuing possession put the Huskies up by five with 2:30 to play. From there, the Huskies went 8-of-12 from the line down the stretch, while the Cougars went 8-of-10. Gonzalez's free throw with 1.6 seconds left on the clock put HBU up by three and Scott's heave from beyond halfcourt hit the right side of the backboard to give the Huskies the win.
For the game, HBU shot a season-best 55.2 percent (32-of-58) from the field and 47.4 percent (9-of-19) from 3-point range, but only 53.3 percent (24-of-45) from the free-throw line. Chicago State shot 45.3 percent (29-of-64), 40 percent (10-of-25) from behind the arc and 63.4 percent (26-of-41) from the line.
The Cougars took a nine-point lead, 65-56, with 11:42 remaining in the game, but Bembry had three layups in a stretch that led the Huskies back to with three at 67-64. Gonzalez's three from the corner got HBU back to within one with 7:25 to go, but Chicago State quickly built its lead back up to eight at 80-72. Gonzalez nailed another long three from the top of the arc to cut the deficit to 80-76 and Echols drilled a three on the next possession to cut it to one with 1:31 left in the game. Echols then made a steal and Moss found Gonzalez cutting to the basket to draw the foul. Gonzalez hit one-of-two to tie the game 80-80 with 1:24 remaining. After a Moss steal under a minute left, Bembry and Gonzalez coverted on one-of-two free throws each to put HBU up 82-80, which led to Carl Montgomery's putback.
Chicago State hit five early 3-pointers and went on a 11-0 run to take a 21-11 lead with 12:34 to go in the first half, but HBU answered back with Hinnenkamp scoring the Huskies' next nine points to cut the Cougars' lead to 25-20 with 10:14 remaining. Bembry's three-point play and a Gonzalez free throw cut the deficit to three, but Chicago State nailed another three. Gonzalez hit a deep three to tie the game, 35-35, with 3:45 left in the half, but HBU gave up back-to-back threes to once again fall behind by six. Sophomore guard Ben Daniels' tipped in a missed jumper at the buzzer to send the Huskies to the locker room down, 44-42.
Gonzalez had 15 points, while Bembry and Hinnenkamp had nine each in the half. Jonathan Montgomery led Chicago State with 14, while Carl Montgomery had 12 off the bench. The Huskies shot 53.3 percent from the floor for the half, while the Cougars shot 51.9 percent from the field, including 57.1 percent (8-of-14) from behind the arc.
The Huskies return to action when they host Utah Valley in the first meeting between the two schools this season Saturday at 7:35 p.m. at Sharp Gym.
