LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State blasted three home runs to score six runs in the eighth inning of what was a low-scoring affair to help down Houston Baptist, 9-1, and sweep the season-opening three-game series Sunday at Presley Askew Field.

HBU junior centerfielder Luke Clements and junior rightfielder Kolby Arnst has two hits apiece, while senior designated hitter Chase Hernandez drove in the only run for the Huskies (0-3).

Lyon went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, while Voight and Ryan Aguayo also had two hits each for New Mexico State (3-0). Bryan Karraker homered and drove in four runs, while Clark drove in a pair for the Aggies.

Ross picked up the victory for New Mexico State, allowing one run on seven hits in 6.2 innings, while senior lefthander Jamie Storey (0-1) took the loss for HBU in a solid outing, giving up four runs on seven hits and striking out seven in seven innings.

HBU jumped on top in the first inning as junior third baseman Robbie Buller smacked a two-out double and scored on Hernandez's single. Even though the Huskies put a runner on base in every inning, they were unable to scratch across another run the rest of the game.

New Mexico State tied the game in the bottom of the second with three consecutive two-out singles, capped by Ryan Starkes' RBI knock. After going down in 1-2-3 in both the third and fourth innings, the Aggies took the lead in the fifth when Lyon led off with a triple and scored on Howard's sacrifice fly. They tacked on another run in the sixth when Aguayo led off with a double and scored on Karraker's RBI groundout.

In the eighth, Parker Hipp led off with a home run to right to chase Storey from the game. Fisher and Aguayo met HBU senior righthander Stephen Nikonchik with a pair of singles, then Karraker cleared the bases with a three-run shot to right. Freshman righty Kobie Hajdik entered the game, walked Lyon and gave up a two-run home run to Clark.

The Huskies return to action when they travel to face Sam Houston State Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in Huntsville, Texas. HBU will play 28 of its next 31 games within the Lone Star State, with its only road trip outside the state being a three-game series at McNeese State March 4-6 only two hours away in Lake Charles, La.
