HOUSTON – After a Houston Baptist missed free throw, East Texas Baptist's Jeremy LaGarde drove the length of the court for the game-winning layup with five seconds left as the Tigers stunned the Huskies, 65-64, in non-conference basketball Sunday afternoon at Sharp Gym.
Senior guard Andrew Gonzalez led HBU (3-21) with 26 points and nine rebounds, while senior guard Shawn Echols added nine points, five rebounds and four assists. Junior forward Terry Bembry also grabbed nine rebounds to tie for the game high.
Josh Chambers led ETBU (15-8) with 14 points, while Jaron Joseph and Deba Egharevba had 11 apiece. LaGarde finished with nine points, five rebounds and five assists. Mack Dunbar led the Tigers with nine rebounds, while Egharevba had eight.
ETBU scored the first five points of the second half, but Gonzalez's three-point play with 14:53 remaining cut the Tigers' lead to one and Echols' drove the baseline for a layup to give the Huskies the lead with 13:06 left. Joseph hit a trey as the Tigers retook the lead by two, 48-46, but sophomore guard Ben Daniels' reverse layup and a pair of free throws by Gonzalez put the Huskies up, 50-48, with 11:06 to go. Burton hit a three and two free throws as to give ETBU a three-point advantage, but senior guard Michael Moss hit a three to tie the game and Echols slashed to the basket for a layup to put HBU back on top, 55-53. Turnipseed nailed a three to give the Tigers a 59-57 lead with 6:51 remaining, but Gonzalez's running bank shot at the 5:08 mark gave the Huskies a one-point edge. Bembry found Gonzalez cutting to the basket for an easy two, but the Tigers answered with an easy bucket of their own to stay within one, 64-63, with 1:08 to play.
The Huskies grabbed two offensive rebounds during the final minute, which allowed them to run the clock down until Echols was fouled with 12.7 seconds remaining. He missed the front end of the one-and-one and LaGarde took the outlet from Egharevba for the go-ahead score. Gonzalez launched a three from the top of the arc as time expired, but it fell short off the front of the rim.
HBU scored the first seven points of the game, but ETBU answered back with the next seven. The Huskies then went on a 9-0 run, capped by Moss's steal and layup with 12:54 left in the half. The Tigers went on an 13-2 run to take a 28-25 lead, but freshman guard Jonathan Evans tied the game with a 3-pointer with 2:55 to go and Echols regained the lead for the Huskies with a three on their next possession. Joseph tied the game, 33-33, on a three with 1:06 left and the two teams went into the break tied, 35-35.
The Huskies shot only 39.5 percent from the field in the first half, while the Tigers shot 43.3 percent. Gonzalez had 12 points in the half, but went more than 13 minutes without scoring until his putback jumper at the buzzer.
For the game, HBU shot only 37.0 percent from the floor and 30.0 percent (6-of-20) from behind the arc, while ETBU shot 37.9 percent from the floor and 29.2 percent (7-of-24) from long range. The Tigers held a huge advantage at the free throw line, hitting 14-of-21, while the Huskies shot only 4-of-8. HBU held a slight edge in rebounds, 45-44.
The Huskies return to Great West Conference play when they host NJIT Thursday at 7:35 p.m. at Sharp Gym.
