KANSAS CITY, Mo. - After a frigid start, in which Houston Baptist missed its first nine shots and found themselves down 23-4 midway through the first half, the Huskies got into a rhythm, but they were in too deep a hole, as the Huskies fell to UMKC, 92-45, Sunday afternoon at the Swinney Recreation Center.
Brittany Barton scored a career-high 15 points, as she connected on 3-of-6 three-pointers.
Destini Texada finished with eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
UMKC had three players in double-figures, led by Dayon Hall-Jones. Two days after scoring a career-high 29 points against Northwest Missouri State, Hall-Jones led all scorers with 20 points this afternoon. Ashli Hill scored 15 points, also grabbing a team-high eight rebounds, five blocks and two steals, and Kim Nezianya scored 10.
UMKC started out hot, scoring the game's first eight points before HBU called a 30-second timeout. Following the timeout, the Kangaroos scored another basket, by Hill, before the Huskies scored their first points, on two free throws by
Devyn Weymouth.
After the 'Roos hit two more baskets to make it 14-2 with 15:08 remaining in the opening half, the Huskies converted three turnovers on their next three possessions, resulting in seven points. Brianna Eldridge had a layup, Eilise O'Connor hit a jumper and Kaycie Boyles hit a three.
UMKC continued its run, scoring three more points on a layup by Boyles, before HBU scored its next two points on free throws by Barton.
The Huskies scored their first basket of the game, at the 11:05-mark, when
Shanice Steenholdt had a layup, assisted by
Maisie Elston. Following a Hall-Jones three, the Huskies answered with a trey by Elston, as the score was 26-9 with 10:09 remaining.
Texada scored the Huskies' next four points before the media timeout at 7:51, with UMKC leading, 28-13. The Huskies continued their run, as the ensuing possession,
Tayler Jefferson hit a jumper to bring the Huskies to within 13, 28-15.
That's when Kim Nezianya took over, scoring the 'Roos' next six points to give the hosts a 34-17 advantage with just under five minutes left in the first half.
The teams battled back and forth the remaining five minutes, as Texada hit a jumper at the buzzer to bring HBU to within 20, 43-23, at the break.
Texada led the Huskies at halftime, with six points and seven rebounds. Hall-Jones scored 13 of her 20 points in the first half, while both Nezianya and Hill each had four boards for the 'Roos.
The second half started with a Husky turnover, resulting in a layup by Nezianya. The Huskies got to within 18, on layups by Barton and Steenholdt, before Eldridge hit a three-pointer to give UMKC a 48-27 advantage at the 17:18-mark of the second half.
The 'Roos continued to run, leading by as many as 28 before a three by Barton stopped the momentum momentarily. The next possession, Hall-Jones hit a jumper to make it 57-20 UMKC with 11:34 remaining in the second half.
The break did not slow down the 'Roo offense, as UMKC scored the next 16 points in the game to lead 73-30 with 7:43 remaining. Steenholdt's layup halted the UMKC run.
With UMKC leading 73-32 with six-and-a-half minutes left in the game, the 'Roos hit four of their five second-half treys in the final minutes of the game. Weymouth and Barton hit long balls for the Huskies, with Barton's career-high basket coming with 1:35 remaining in the game.
