Duquesne Pulls Away from HBU, 81-64

HOUSTON – After Houston Baptist cut its lead to one with 12:23 left in the game, Duquesne outscored the Huskies, 25-9, the rest of the way to pull away for an 81-64 victory in non-conference basketball Saturday night at Sharp Gym.

Senior guard Andrew Gonzalez had 23 points and seven rebounds for the Huskies (1-13), but was held scoreless during that final pivotal stretch. Senior forward Fred Hinnenkamp scored a season-high 14 points off the bench, going 6-for-9 from the field and hitting a pair of 3-pointers. Terry Bembry tied his season high to lead HBU with a game-high 13 rebounds.

Five players scored in double figures for Duquesne (9-5), led by Bill Clark, who had 17 points, six rebounds and seven steals. T.J. McConnell added 15 points, five rebounds and five assists, Mike Talley had 13 points, Damian Saunders had 12 points, seven rebounds and four blocks and Sean Johnson added 10 points off the bench for the Dukes.

Duquesne shot 51.8 percent from the field, including 40.9 percent (9-for-22) from 3-point range, but only made 14-of-28 free throws. HBU shot 41.7 percent, 38.1 percent (8-for-21) from long range, and made 6-of-11 from the line. The Huskies outrebounded their opponent for only the second time this season, 38-34, but committed 26 turnovers.

The Dukes went up by nine early in the second half, but Gonzalez scored 11 points in only two-and-a-half minutes, including the 3-pointer that cut Duquesne's lead to one. HBU turned the ball over 10 times during the last quarter of the game and Duquesne took advantage, scoring 18 points off Husky turnovers in the second half.

In the first half, Duquesne went on a 10-0 run to take a 16-8 lead, but senior guard Shawn Echols hit back-to-back threes to tie the game, 20-20. The Dukes answered back to go up 30-22, but the Huskies once again charged back to cut the lead to 33-31. Clark's 3-pointer at the buzzer allowed Duquesne to take a 42-35 lead into halftime.

The Huskies return to action when they open a three-game road trip at Chicago State in the Great West Conference opener Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Chicago.
