Big Second Half Gives North Dakota Victory Over HBU

UND uses 16-0 run, outscores Huskies 57-21 in second half

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – North Dakota used a 16-0 second-half run to defeat the HBU women's basketball team, 104-54, Saturday afternoon at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.

Jamie Spriggs came off the bench to score a team-high 15 points for HBU (2-18, 0-5 GWC). Destini Texada finished with 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Joselyn Pugh finished with four points and six boards.

Four Fighting Sioux (8-11, 4-0 GWC) finished in double figures, led by Mallory Youngblut with 24 points. Corey Lof earned a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Allysa Wall and Carly Rothfusz each finished with 15 points. Rothfusz scored 12 of her points in the second half. North Dakota had 19 steals in the game.

“Our execution in the first half was excellent, getting North Dakota out of its zone,” said head coach Mary Gleason. “We had great scoring inside against their zone, but we were a different team in the second half. We're hopeful to move forward and execute 40 minutes of a game plan.”

The first half was very closely contested as the largest lead of the half was 14 and that was UND at halftime. North Dakota scored the game's first basket as Lof hit a jumper, but Texada and Ernesta Griciunaite had two quick buckets to give HBU an early 4-2 lead.

A Wall jumper was answered by a Spriggs layup as the Huskies kept their two-point lead, 6-4. The Sioux rattled off eight straight points to lead 12-6, as Lof hit a jumper followed by a three-pointer by Megan Lauck. The ensuing Husky possession, Nicole Smart stole the ball and had a layup followed by a free throw for a three-point play. Spriggs stopped the run with a layup with 16 minutes left in the first half with UND leading 12-8.

Texada followed Spriggs' layup with a jumper and the Huskies were down by two, 12-10. Wall hit a jumper, answered by a layup by Texada. Youngblut hit her first three of the afternoon, giving the Sioux a 17-12 lead.

Texada was fouled and hit both free throws, followed by a jumper by Spriggs and the Huskies were down by one, 17-16. Following an HBU timeout, Youngblut hit a three-pointer to give UND a four-point advantage. Brittany Barton answered Youngblut's three with one of her own and HBU was down by just one again, 20-19.

Following a media timeout, UND used a 4-0 run to pull ahead by five, as Wall hit two free throws and Lof hit a jumper. Following a UND timeout, Tia Jackson hit a three-pointer and the Huskies were down by two, 24-22, with 10 minutes left in the opening half. The Sioux pulled away using an 8-0 run, as Charnay Mothershed hit a three, followed by a Youngblut jumper and a Smart long-ball. Barton stopped the run with a jumper, but the Sioux answered with a layup by Lof and Mothershed hit one of two free throws as they increased their lead to 35-24 with six minutes left in the first half.

Spriggs hit two free throws and Joselyn Pugh stole the ball as Texada had a jumper. Youngblut hit a three answered by a jumper by Spriggs. Smart missed a three-pointer, but Madi Buck got the offensive rebound and laid it in, giving the Sioux a 40-30 lead with four minutes remaining.

Smart stole the ball and it resulted in a jumper by Buck. The Huskies scored three unanswered points, all on free throws. UND ended the first half on a 5-0 run as Carly Rothfusz hit a three followed by a Lof layup.

North Dakota started where they left off, as Lauck hit a jumper followed by two free throws, to begin the second half. Pugh had a jumper for HBU that was answered by a Wall jumper as the Sioux led 53-35.

North Dakota went on a 7-0 run to lead 60-37 that was answered by a Texada jumper. She missed the ensuing free throw for a three-point play. Mothershed stole the ball on the next HBU possession and had a fast-break layup. Rothfusz had another steal for UND and it resulted in an HBU foul. Mothershed hit both free throws as the Sioux led 64-39 with 13 minutes left in the second half.

Texada had a jumper in the paint that was the last time HBU scored in a span of six minutes, in which UND went on a 16-0 run to lead the Huskies, 80-41. Rothfusz hit two free throws followed by a layup by Wall. HBU took a timeout but did not slow down the Sioux. On the ensuing Husky possession, Smart stole the ball and assisted on a fast-break layup by Lof. Wall had a layup assisted by Lof as Youngblut hit a jumper on the next possession. Smart had another steal for the Sioux which resulted in a Husky foul. Lof hit both free throws and Lauck had a steal, resulting in a Wall jumper and free throw for a three-point play.

A media timeout did not slow down the Sioux as Youngblut hit two free throws and Mothershed had another steal. The Huskies finally broke through with a jumper by Spriggs with six minutes left in the second half and North Dakota leading 80-43.

Katie Houdek hit a jumper answered by a Megan Green three. Mothershed answered with a long ball of her own and following a Buck steal, Rothfusz hit another three for North Dakota, as the Sioux led 88-46 with five minutes remaining.

Jackson hit a jumper in the paint but Rothfusz hit another three. Pugh found Barton open as Barton hit a three with two minutes to go in the second half. Buck had a layup followed by two Mothershed free throws and the Sioux led 99-51.

Mothershed hit a three as the Sioux hit the 100-point plateau, 102-51, followed by a fast-break layup by Mothershed.

Jade Penick scored her first points as a Husky as she hit a three-pointer, assisted by Barton, with 47 seconds left to complete the scoring.

The Huskies return to action Thursday as they come home to face Chicago State for Pack the House Night at Sharp Gym.
