VERMILLION, S.D. – The number one scoring defense in the Great West Conference held the HBU women's basketball team to a season-low 33 points, as South Dakota defeated the Huskies, 62-33, Thursday evening at the DakotaDome.
The 62 points were the fewest allowed this season by the Huskies since holding Sam Houston State to 48 points on Dec. 11.
Destini Texada nearly recorded her sixth double-double on the season as she led HBU (2-17, 0-4 GWC) with 11 points and nine rebounds. She also had a team-high three assists.
Jamie Spriggs was second on the team with 10 points and six boards. She had one of the team's three blocks and one of the team's two steals.
Reigning Great West Conference Player of the Week
Amber Hegge recorded her second-straight double-double as she had game-highs of 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead South Dakota (11-8, 2-1 GWC). She was 5-for-11 from the floor and 3-for-4 from beyond the arc, also adding three assists, two steals and two blocks.
Annie Roche had 11 points and seven rebounds and
Tempesst Wilson added 10 points.
HBU had its only lead of the game as Spriggs had a layup 11 seconds into the game. Wilson tied the game with a layup of her own, then hit the ensuing free throw for a three-point play.
Alexis Yackley hit a three-pointer after an HBU turnover to give the Coyotes a 6-2 lead.
Following a layup by
Tia Jackson, Roche knocked down a three, assisted by Hegge.
Joselyn Pugh hit a jumper, but Roche hit another long ball for a 12-6 Coyote lead with 16 minutes left in the opening half.
Texada had a layup, but South Dakota went on a 6-0 run, as the Coyotes hit three free throws and Hegge hit a three-pointer. Spriggs' jumper with 11 minutes left stopped the run, but
Katelyn Edwards nailed a three to give USD a 21-10 lead.
Each team answered with baskets, as Spriggs had another layup, followed by a jumper by Hegge. Another layup by Spriggs was answered by a layup by Hegge, as South Dakota kept the 11-point lead, 25-14.
Three minutes went by with no scoring, as HBU missed three 3-pointers. South Dakota's
Stacia Robertson hit both free throws with 4:20 left in the first half as the Coyote lead reached 13. Spriggs answered Robertson's freebies with a pair of her own as South Dakota led, 27-16.
South Dakota ended the half on an 8-0 run, as Roche hit a three-pointer, followed by a long ball by
Yackley and a pair of
Jodie Boss free throws. The two teams entered intermission with South Dakota's largest lead of the evening at 35-16.
South Dakota started the second half on another 8-0 run as Hegge had a pair of layups and Boss and Roche each added a basket. The rally was ended by a Jackson three-pointer as the Coyote lead was 43-19.
Texada added a layup to cut the deficit to 22.
Ernesta Griciunaite missed a three and Hegge was fouled on the ensuing possession, hitting both free throws.
Boss had a layup followed by a three-pointer by Wilson which gave the Coyotes a 30-point lead, 51-21. Green answered Wilson's long ball with one of her own, followed by an HBU timeout.
Wilson scored on a layup as Texada had a layup and Green hit one of two free throws as South Dakota led 53-27 with five minutes left in the second half.
South Dakota scored four of the game's next five points as a Pugh free throw was sandwiched between a layup by Robertson and a pair of free throws by Wilson. After a missed Husky layup,
Sam Mehr hit a three-pointer, but Texada answered with a layup with two minutes remaining.
Teresa Case entered the game with under two minutes left in the game and scored on a layup. Texada answered with a layup of her own with 18 seconds left to end the game.
